Question:

One gets melanoma from OVERexposure to the sun. Sunlight is good for us, it interacts with our skin oils to form Vitamin D, a natural source of that vitamin. Ok Sue…do you know how much sun exposure you need per day to form your daily Vit D requirement?

How much do you need to get help with SAD? Gordon Held

Not precisely, but I believe I read that 15-20 minutes per day is sufficient. I did post that prolonged exposure, especially at mid-day is not necessarily a good idea. But avoiding *any* sun exposure for fear of getting cancer is taking it to the other extreme. My father was a farmer was exposed to the summer sun all day for maybe 50 years. His skin got *very* tanned/burnt (take your pick). At 89 he’s had a few medical problems, but skin cancer has not been one of them. It depends on the amount of melanin in your skin too. sue Edward J. My spelling, syntax, denotation and grammer are perfect.  It is my typing that is bad.

Response:

It’s possible that your father ate alot of fresh fruit and vegetable directly from his own garden which suplied him with the proper nutrition to fight off skin cancer??? If one gets enough vitamin C, E, and anti oxidants it is possible. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Ok Sue…do you know how much sun exposure you need per day to form your daily Vit D requirement? Depends on the time of day and location. Ten minutes or so is enough. I haven’t read all this thread (still having problems with access), but sun worship is O U T. Even simple skin cancers can kill. Basal and squamous cell carcinomas can kill people. As for melanoma, it is on the increase, especially here in the Southern Hemisphere. And melanoma aint no fun. I know. I had one, on the ankle– very, very scary and incredibly painful, with skin grafts required after surgery. Plus at the same time I broke the other ankle, but my ‘annual break’ is another story. In this part of the world only idiots go out in the sun unprotected, because believe you me, the danger is real. I’m not trying to scare anybody, but some of you appear to need a good dose of reality. How much do you need to get help with SAD?

None. SAD can be treated with artificial light.     pax    silverfern

Well, it was fresh only in the summer ;- We had a garden every year and lived in a big fruit-growing area, so my mom froze and canned everything we didn’t eat fresh. sue

Thanks for the clear headed words of truth. Sun paronoia has grown rampant in the past couple of decades! As you’ll probably agree, the optimal amount of time to spend in the sun varies from person to person…but like exercise, a regular dosage in moderation is great for *most* people, but certainly not everybody…and it’s also health promoting to let sunshine light our homes and offices. Most buildings or rooms with all artificial lighting (no natural)and no fresh air can be pretty dreadful. Give me access to fresh air and sunshine or give me death! :-)

Melanoma is on the rise.  Pale is truely beautiful. I agree with "melanoma is on the rise". However, "pale is beautiful"? I suppose it is if one is a fair-skinned caucasion. I fit in neither of those categories so I suppose dark is also beautiful? <smile

Sounds like the all knowing one never heard of melanoma from sun exposure. You forgot the more common basal cell carcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas of the skin.  THere is also premature wrinkling for those concerned with that type of reaction.  And last but not least solar keratosis. Melanoma is on the rise.  Pale is truely beautiful.

I was going to chime in on this miserable ‘treyabot excuse for wise health advice, but I’m glad I held off long enough for a professional to debunk it.   Essentially hairless mammals like humans, especially those with light skin (e.g. ancestry from the north and west of Europe), are very poorly adapted to prolonged epidermal exposure to direct sunlight — enjoy the sunshine, but with caution and respect for your body’s largest vital organ!  Bailey was an interesting writer, but obviously not a health practicioner, and tanning is the body protecting itself against what it rightly detects as a threat to its health. http://www.users.uniserve.com/~samuel/brucemrg.htm http://www.users.uniserve.com/~samuel/brucsong.htm                    m(_ _)m

As many know, the sage Djwhal Khul recommends sunshine on your shoulders. The following excerpts from His books might be of interest or use to some.

Dear Friend, thanks for your post. Alice Bailey’s writings have been favorites of mine for many, many years. Many are ready and open to the teachings and many are not ;-)  The Great Invocation has been invoked almost is interested.             The Great Invocation From the point of Light within the Mind of God  Let light stream forth into the minds of men.          Let Light descend on Earth. From the point of Love within the Heart of God  Let love stream forth into the hearts of men.          May Christ return to Earth. From the centre where the Will of God is known   Let purpose guide the little wills of men – The purpose which the Masters know and serve. From the centre which we call the race of men   Let the Plan of Love and Light work out  And may it seal the door where evil dwells. Let Light and Love and Power restore the Plan on Earth.                   OM  OM  OM May We All Honor the Paths of Each Other. ukdena

Contact with the sun should be much sought after, and the vitalization that comes through its rays. The sun kills all germs and frees from disease.  (Letters on  Occult Meditation p334) The main centre for the reception of prana at present is a centre between the shoulder blades.  (Treatise on Cosmic Fire p98) Prana (1)     Solar prana – this is that vital and magnetic fluid which radiates from the sun, and which is transmitted to man’s etheric body…It is… emitted as powerful radiations, which are applied directly through certain plexi in the uppermost part of the etheric body. … (2)     Primarily the functions of the etheric body are three in number: 1. It is the receiver of prana.    2.  It is the assimilator of prana. 3. It is the transmitter of prana. (Treatise on Cosmic Fire p93) (3)     The pranic emanations of the sun are absorbed by the etheric body, via certain centres which are found principally in the upper part of the body, from whence they are directed downwards to the centre which is called the etheric spleen. … The main centre for the reception of prana at present is a centre between the shoulder blades. (Treatise on Cosmic Fire p98) (4)     The more refined and rarefied the form, the better a receiver of prana it will be, and the less will be the resistance found to the uprising of kundalini at the appointed time.(Treatise on Cosmic Fire p103) (5)  The [human] race suffers from certain incapacities, which may be described as follows: -first: Inability to tap pranic currents, owing to the unhealthy lives passed by so many…. The cure is apparent
