Question:

How are you faring? Thank you for being concerned.  Myself, Mr. Pumpkin, Aggie Marble, and

Victor Velcro are in Central Florida, 22 miles East of Disney World.  We did not have any problems at all as none of the hurricane winds came up this far. DH, David, who drives a tractor trailer, was in South Florida when Katrina struck.  Winds were blowing the trucks around dangerously.  David made some phone calls and was able to locate an empty building that would hold three trucks so he and two other drivers were under cover and protected, praying that the cover would remain until the worst of the winds passed. It did. We feel terrible for those who lost their lives, those who were injured and lost homes.  For so many years Florida had a "pass" on hurricanes.  No longer. Charleen

Response:

Purrs for the safety of *everyone* in the new path of the hurricane would be greatly appreciated.

Absolutely! Tom and I were just talking about that and how we hope NOLA is spared. — Victor M. Martinez Owned and operated by the Fantastic Seven (TM)

So glad to hear you and DH are safe. Purrs for anyone affected already, or about to be.  Stay safe, everyone. What she said.  It reminds me to be thankful for the climate in the UK.  No hurricanes since 1987.  No earthquakes, only the occasional tremour which does no more harm than make the floor wobble and rattle the cups and saucers. Okay, it rains a lot..and the weather here is seldom the same from one day to another – hence one of our favourite topics to discuss is the weather ;-) We don’t get the extremes of temperature some other countries experience. The lowest I recall was as I mentioned in another thread, -16C which was hard on me as I don’t have central heating as such. If the temperature is below freezing for more than a week, the most vulnerable people on state benefits get an extra payment for fuel. The highest temperature I can remember is 31C, a couple of years ago at the beginning of August.  Just in time for me to get used to it before I went to Germany in the middle of that month, where I nearly fried.  I was there for nearly two weeks and it was more than 30C every single day.  90+F!  There had been no rain for ages in that particular region, so I promised I would bring some with me. Sure enough, we were out birdwatching in a remote area with no shelter for miles, dressed for the heat when it suddenly began to throw it down, like a cloudburst. "I told you the rain would follow me"  I said as we crouched down trying to cover ourselves with a flimsy light cardigan I had on to protect myself from sunburn. Tweed

Lots and lots of purrs and best wishes for everyone affected, — Polonca & Soncek

I was going to post a similar message about Hurricane Katrina when my computer told me the news this morning.  It also said that 2.4 million people there were now without electricity, so I thought they might not be able to tell us yet. Sending keep safe wishes to all who live in its path. Tweed

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – How are you faring? I’m very worried about friends and family in New Orleans.  Katrina (now a category 3) is projected to hit just east of the mouth of the Mississippi – the worst possible place since the storm surge (projected at 10 feet or more) will "back up" the river and dump millions of tons of water into the city (which is 10 feet below sea level)!  They’re already talking about evacuating St. Bernard Parish, so I may end up with a house full of refugees again.  I just hope the 25 hour (normally 6 hour), stuck-in-traffic drive from last time doesn’t discourage them from getting the hell out of there!! Purrs for the safety of *everyone* in the new path of the hurricane would be greatly appreciated. Hugs, CatNipped

But I’ve been told by Brit friends that it is that moisture in your fog and humidity that helps give you that beautiful complexion. In my country too many people, especially the young, don’t consider the sun the enemy of their skin it really is; your climate protects you from its harm. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text –

We don’t get fog that often, it’s mainly a November thing.  My friend Stephen who looked after some of my chickens while I was in hosp is a landscape gardener in his early 40’s.  He now has skin cancer from not protecting himself from the sun over the years. Tweed

I had a skin cancer taken off my hand last week and I never was much of a sun worshiper.  Fair skinned people have about a 25% chance of getting a skin cancer over the course of a lifetime.  Much of the damage from the sun occurs in childhood.
