LOL about your brother, Chip. :~) Actually, I like to sleep in baseball hats because it keeps my wisps of hair from tickling and itching my face. I always sleep with a fan on me or my nose gets all stuffed up and I’ve got long hair. Naturally my hair brushes my face and sometimes I will scratch my face or neck open in my sleep. Other times, without a hat, I just can’t sleep and then I get an onset of anxiety. I’ll take the hat, please! :~) kili — The charter is available at: http://readystump.algebra.com/~asapm

Response:

  – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – A good hat is vital for the no hair thing. Yes, hats do become important. I actually spent some time looking into hat options over the last two years. There are plenty of great hats, but they are often expensive. The first inexpensive solution I tried was a straw weave, wide brimmed hat from K-Mart ($12). It didn’t look bad and the open weave allowed nice air flow (good for hot days). However, the open weave didn’t offer the best protection from direct sunlight and the hat was a bother to carry around when I wasn’t wearing it. Billed caps (baseball caps) are inexpensive and good at keeping the sun out of your eyes, but they offer little protection for most of the face, ears and neck. Currently, I only use billed caps on very cold days when I’ll be pulling a hood over them. My favorite solution so far is survival hats (like fishing hats). Only about $10 at the Army-Navy surplus store. All-round brim for good sun protection and even a chin strap for windy weather (if not windy, just let the strap dangle behind your head). They are also collapsible, so not much of a bother when not in use. Overall, very practical, which is why you see so many soldiers and scientists using them in the field. My local Army-Navy store sells them in both solid colors and camouflage patterns. Generally, light colors heat up less in the sun, so buy light to stay cool or dark to stay warm.
I think some people call them "bucket" hats. On real sunny days when I go for a hike I wear one with a Martin Guitar logo stitched into it. Pretty much protects everything, but lately I’ve just been grabbing a handful of sunscreen and rubbing all over my head. The extra left on my hands goes all over my face and ears. However, living at a ski resort I can tell you it’s true you lose a lot of heat from your head. — The charter is available at: http://readystump.algebra.com/~asapm

A good hat is vital for the no hair thing. Yes, hats do become important. I actually spent some time looking into hat options over the last two years. There are plenty of great hats, but they are often expensive.

[little snip] My favorite solution so far is survival hats (like fishing hats).
I think my mother has a hat like that for the summer. What I meant though was a good winter hat: when I was shorn it was below freezing out and I didn’t even own a hat. Brain popsicle! — Vashti — The charter is available at: http://readystump.algebra.com/~asapm

Currently, I only use billed caps on very cold days when I’ll be pulling a hood over them. My favorite solution so far is survival hats (like fishing hats).
Arthur, My dad wore a hat similar to that sometimes, at least it looked like that when he came in out of the rain. Remember when men wore hats?? like… most all men, especially men in suits. I say you start a fad. I like hats like that. They are classy.
Hi, Sheldon, You are right, more and more men are shaving their heads. I think it looks good on men and beats a toupee. Hope you get the computer problems solved. Thank goodness for our meds… smiles, Elise

Sheldon, I think the bald look is hot. I keep trying to get my husband to shave his head but he wants to wait until he starts losing his hair.
Hair wreaths are okay by me. My dad had one. Toupees are silly and comb overs completely unnecessary (and kind of funny when the wind blows)…but any amount of hair or not makes not one iota of difference to me. I’m more concerned with the heart and the value system of a guy than what grows or doesn’t grow out of his head. that’s silly to me. I could say more, but I’ll just tell Deirdre the rest of that one. Sheldon, I’m happy you are getting comfortable with your new look. Men are kind of lucky like that – you can grow beards, and moustaches and shave your heads and all kinds of stuff. Women don’t get as many options! Its cool people like your new look. No more hiding inside, now. Go out and strut. Good luck with the computer problems. If you get stuck, you can email me, I’ll put you in touch with my son, he’s a tech and works for free.
What she said. It reminds me to be thankful for the climate in the UK. No hurricanes since 1987. No earthquakes, only the occasional tremour which does no more harm than make the floor wobble and rattle the cups and saucers. Okay, it rains a lot..and the weather here is seldom the same from one day to another – hence one of our favourite topics to discuss is the weather We don’t get the extremes of temperature some other countries experience. The lowest I recall was as I mentioned in another thread, -16C which was hard on me as I don’t have central heating as such. If the temperature is below freezing for more than a week, the most vulnerable people on state benefits get an extra payment for fuel. The highest temperature I can remember is 31C, a couple of years ago at the beginning of August. Just in time for me to get used to it before I went to Germany in the middle of that month, where I nearly fried. I was there for nearly two weeks and it was more than 30C every single day. 90+F! There had been no rain for ages in that particular region, so I promised I would bring some with me. Sure enough, we were out birdwatching in a remote area with no shelter for miles, dressed for the heat when it suddenly began to throw it down, like a cloudburst. "I told you the rain would follow me" I said as we crouched down trying to cover ourselves with a flimsy light cardigan I had on to protect myself from sunburn.
– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – How are you faring? I’m very worried about friends and family in New Orleans. Katrina (now a category 3) is projected to hit just east of the mouth of the Mississippi – the worst possible place since the storm surge (projected at 10 feet or more) will "back up" the river and dump millions of tons of water into the city (which is 10 feet below sea level)! They’re already talking about evacuating St. Bernard Parish, so I may end up with a house full of refugees again. I just hope the 25 hour (normally 6 hour), stuck-in-traffic drive from last time doesn’t discourage them from getting the hell out of there!!
I had a skin cancer taken off my hand last week and I never was much of a sun worshiper. Fair skinned people have about a 25% chance of getting a skin cancer over the course of a lifetime. Much of the damage from the sun occurs in childhood.

Purrs for the safety of *everyone* in the new path of the hurricane would be greatly appreciated. Hugs, CatNipped

::I’m getting addicted to diet Dr. Pepper. I drink 2 or 3 of those per day. It is one of the only diet sodas that doesn`t taste like diet to me. I recently tried Pepsi One and was surprised at how good it tasted. I believe it is made with Splenda. I`m hoping more and more diet sodas will start using Splenda. I think it tastes much better than aspartame. I try and limit myself to one diet soda per day, some days I have none, because I am worried about triggering a migraine. I use to get wicked migraines after consuming aspartame. I don`t know why that doesn`t happen anymore, perhaps because I`m taking toprol which blocks the migraines. ::Women sure seem to love those vibrators. :) On a medical group I post to, ::one woman said she perferred her vibrator to her BF.
Sounds like you have uninspiring leaders. Like any other organisation, WW has good, bad & indifferent leaders of its sessions. Luckily, the one I attend has a good leader. Find out where there are other meetings in your area, who the leaders are and switch. Also provide feedback (politely) to WW head office about your bad experience.
Hi Katy and welcome to the group. Sounds like you;ve hit a bad meeting. I’ve been to some of them too – just keep looking around for a better one if possible. If not, stick around here and we’ll answer any questions you’ve got. Here’s our welcome notice to get you started. Welcome to this great newsgroup where you’ll receive lots of support, advice, and encouragement. Once a week on Sundays, I post a list of links that newcomers to asdww might find useful. You may want to look for that later in the week, or do a backwards search for last Sunday’s post. In the meantime, here’s our FAQ: http://www.didian.com/asdww/ our welcome notice: http://www.geocities.com/welcomenotice/index.html Frequently seen acronyms on this NG: NSV = Non-Scale Victory WOE = Way of Eating WOL = Way of Life (Living) OP = on Points or On Program DH = Dear or Darling Husband DS/DD/DGD/etc = Dear or Darling Son, Daughter, Granddaughter, etc WI = Weigh-in Amberle3’s Challenges: Totally Groovy exercise challenge: http://www.angelfire.com/me4/travelgirl/tg.htm Choose to Lose weight loss challenge: http://www.angelfire.com/me4/travelgirl/ctl.htm Weight Loss Challenge Summary: http://www.angelfire.com/me4/travelgirl/summary.htm Other acronyms: http://www.wwlissa.com/dwlz100+/100+acronyms.htm Here’s a short synopsis of the USA Flexpoints program by Joyce – How many points you can eat is only based on your current weight, as you lose weight those points allowed will decrease (logic is that your body will need less to operate). At 183 pounds and based on the new US flexpoints system, you will have a set point target of 24. In addition to this you are allowed 35 flexpoints to be used throughout the week … as well as any activity points you earn on a particular day. When your weight drops to 175, your target drops to 22 points … weight reaches 150, target once again drop to 20 points. 3 servings of dairy of recommended per day, 5 servings of fruit and veggies, minimum of 6 glasses of water. To calculate food and activity points, I love this computer desktop calculator … http://www.zythra.com/downloads/points.exe The basic plan is easy. Eat at least your minimum daily number of points. Points do not carry over from day to day. You are allotted 35 weekly flexpoints to be used at your discretion … can divide them up and use daily (would be an additional 5 points per day) or save them and use them for a special occassion during the week. Activity points are earned based when exercising, but can ONLY be used on the day they are earned. Joyce WW starting weight: 228.8 – 2/5/02 current weight: 133.3 Lifetime: 4/4/03 And here’s an explanation of Core/No-count by Laura – It is a great plan. You DO however need to make sure that you are eating at your normal Flex plan target number of points. This can be difficult for some and you WILL stop losing. Here is the summary of the plan: http://ahwww.home.comcast.net/summary.htm Here is the detail list of foods: http://ahwww.home.comcast.net/wwcoreplan.htm Basic rules: 1. Eat as much of the core foods as you need to feel "satisfied" (not full). 2. If you want to eat foods that are not on the core foods list use you 35 weekly points allowance (WPA). Note: use these points on healthy foods and not junk. 3. Activity points are used to supplement the 35 WPA for Non-core food items only. They must be used on the day they are earned. Note: most people find that they will increase the amount of core foods because they are hungrier due to exercising. 4. 2 teaspoons of heathy oil daily is required. ~Laura Please note that if you live in onther countries (UK, Australia, NZ, Europe), the Points plans are different. The UK and Australia/NZ calculate points based on saturated fat and total kilojoules. Most of Europe calculates based on total fat and total kilojoules. The desktop calculator above can handle all of these programs.
I will add to this. There are supposed to be topics that are WW related, the leaders get a suggested script thing. Mine are always on WW topics. You need to report these people. And if you can, attend a different meeting. I am in a rather medium sized town in South Texas and we have three different ones here.
I can understand your frustration. I think both of your leaders were in the wrong meeting. My leader does share her experience with losing weight as she lost 95 pounds decades ago. She also talks about strategies for eating out and lots of other assigned topics. Yes, they get assigned topics that they are supposed to discuss. Clearly yours does not. Find another meeting location. I would also check to see if your location is part of WW international or one of the rare franchises out there. You should complain to the district manager and WW headquarters. They are taking your money and not even discussing WW topics as they are supposed to.

The "instructor" flew through the Getting Started book (while she kept looking at the clock) and said, "call if you have questions." My second meeting was last night. When I checked in, the "checker-in-er" never made eye contact with me. She took my coupons, registered my weight, and handed me a booklet for "week 2" participants. I went early, and was SO disapointed that I did. The "instructor" for that night (different from the first meeting) arrived early, too, and for 30 minutes she stood in the front of the room and talked about herself….how her legs are SOOOO long and that the top part of her torso is SOOOO short…..how she teaches kick-boxing and aerobics ALLLL day long…..augh! There was never any interaction with anyone in the room….we all just sat there and forced a smile (at least I did). She had her stage for the night! It really did turn me off! When she started her "talk", she talked about skin cancer and getting screened early. Not a mention about Weight Watchers or anything. I left, not learning anything more about Weight Watchers than I had than when I arrived. Okay, so can someone out there tell me, WHAT EXACTLY ARE THOSE MEETINGS FOR? Am I wasting my time by going and sitting there being told things that I already know (or have magazine subscriptions that help me out). Do they ever talk about Weight Watchers and the program? I can lose weight, but I do best when I am held accountable to someone else. That’s why I joined WW. I thought that by going to weekly meetings, I would have to "share" my weight loss/gain with others….that i would get support from others…..that i might get some good, healthy recipes and eating tips. After these two nights, I feel like I am wasting my time and money! Any suggestions? Sheri

I feel so bad for you!! Sounds like a bad case of bad leaders!! :( Mine are always so helpful. Maybe look up the weight watchers number for your local area, and voice your opinion to the district or whatever. K

I think the best suggestion is to change meetings. Is there a meeting in another town close by that you could go to? You can just turn up at another meeting and try it out if you like. I am currently not going to meetings for similar reasons. In 6 meetings there were three different leaders, all of whom basically said they were just "filling in" and waffled on with a bunch of garbage. The woman who had previously led that group was fantastic and did all the supportive, helpful stuff you are looking for. Unfortunately she got sick and had to leave. It isn’t really feasible for me to go to a different meeting, but I will go back to my ‘local’ in a month or two and see who is running it. I really like meetings, but only if the leader is good. eggs.

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Okay everybody, yes I disappeared for quite a while. I don’t know if I’d had my second sinus surgery at that time but now it stands at two surgeries to roto-rooter out my head. I had a great doc and recovered well. I started exercising at Curves for Women and went on their diet losing 35 pounds. I’ve since had to stop thanks to inflammation of the digestive tract that makes eating an adventure! I’m still susceptible to every bug that comes along so continuously fight off sinus infections and colds. It really is ltterbox offerings to have a depressed immune system. I had planned to get the flu shot this year but my doc’s office didn’t get any and I couldn’t ‘justify’ my need at the grocery store geriatric mass innoculations. I’ve also had some more rounds with skin cancer but my new gp doc was on a dermatology track before going into family practice, so she’s pretty vigilant. I’ve also been found by my biological mother’s widower. I have two half-sisters and a half-brother that I never knew about. This contact has thrown my dad into insecurity city and I’ve had to repeatedly remind him that they are my parents and these people are strangers that I just happen to share DNA with. All the psychological stresses that go along with this have not helped on the physical health front. Rusty has been my rock through all of this and really helped when things got overwhelming. Jack is still his grumpy self, but now likes to sleep at the head of my bed. Pinhead is still his psychotic self and is at this moment holding my daughter down on the couch for his napping comfort. Pookie has been my great nursecat throughout the whole illness mess and always sleeps with me when I get even the smallest sniffle. We bought a clipper to shave the poor baby(Pookie) because he just can’t reach where he needs to and he also loves how it feels to get petted when he’s been shaved. I’m taking a placement test next week to start college and hopefully get into their nursing program. I gave up my practical nursing license when I went full time in the mommy business and now it will take the same amount of time and money to just go for my RN. I know this has been long, but it’s been a while since I’ve been here. I have missed the place but haven’t had much time for anything but kids, cats and house. — Motherthing Life is a banquet, and most poor suckers are starving to death. – Rosalind Russell

Glad to see you back, Motherthing. Sounds like you have been through a lot. Purrs that your health improves. I think it’s cool your in touch with some bio-family members. I tracked down mine, and although I can’t say I adored all of them, it is nice to have found them. Hope your dad can understand you’re just adding to your circle, not leaving him out. Best of luck on going after your RN! I met a woman a few weeks ago who gave me a ride who has been working as a home care helper for some 40 years. She said she is going to go back to school and get her RN just for the heck of it! I say good for her, and good for you! Best of luck, Ginger-lyn

I know this has been long, but it’s been a while since I’ve been here. I have missed the place but haven’t had much time for anything but kids, cats and house. — Motherthing Life is a banquet, and most poor suckers are starving to death. – Rosalind Russell

Okay everybody, yes I disappeared for quite a while.
