Question:

: Anybody ever have dreams or nightmares about their cats?  Mine usually happen : when I’m under stress, and I dream our cats are hurt or lost and I wake up and : have to go find them and make sure they’re safe (they always are, but they : hate it when I wake them up by hugging them!).

I had the WORST nightmare the other night.  My husband actually had to wake me up and I was crying.  I’ve been very disturbed by the stories of the Noah’s Ark cat killings and more recently about the burnt kitty Olivia.  In my nightmare, I was driving my car past the animal shelter and there were rows and rows of dead kitties (sob!) in the street and I got out of the car but couldn’t help them!!  It was so awful!  I hope that the animal-abusers who did these horrible deeds get the punishment they deserve.  If it were up to me, I’d get those two college students and light them on fire and see how they like it…(I know, I know, two wrongs don’t make a right–yet if there was more "eye for an eye" mentality, I wonder if there would be less mischief being done.)  It really makes me wonder why there is so much evil in this world.  Well, sorry about this downer topic, but when I had calmed down, I hugged and kissed my beautiful kitties, and said a prayer for the animals that are not as fortunate to have loving and caring owners. -Bean–owned by Nikita =^..^= and Ripken ^..^< Sign my guestbook and visit me at http://members.aol.com/Mikenbean/

I frequently have dreams that I am traveling with my cats.  They keep escaping from the car, but I always manage to get them back unharmed. However, after I have been traveling for about three days (in my dream) I realize that I forgot the litter box.  My kitties have been "holding it" for three days!  I realize how uncomfortable this is for them, not to mention the health hazards…I usually wake up having to piddle quite badly myself…

Response:

I’ve only had my cat a few days, but I dreamed about her the first night after I got her.  Luckily, it wasn’t a "danger" dream.  What happened was, I met President Clinton.  He told me he’d heard that I’d adopted a cat, and we went to the Library of Congress and he helped me find some good books on the subject of cats.  (I suppose he knew all the best ones because of Socks.)  We talked about cats for a while and then I woke up. In the dream I liked President Clinton, which is how I knew I was dreaming.  <g I rarely remember the dreams I have, either, so the fact that I can recall this one is pretty odd — not that it’s not odd enough to begin with. — Manual Labor  <http://www.manual.com/

Oh, no they haven’t.  Why do you think they keep escaping from the car?

I’ve had two odd instances of dreaming of a favourite cat that died . . .about 11 years ago.  I’ve never dreamt about her till about 4 months ago.  I dreamt that she came back from the dead and that she was alive. She wasn’t bad in the dream and I was incredibly happy though freaked. I didn’t question how she came back to life, I was just happy she was alive.  I’d wake up from both dreams, feeling really weird. I do miss Fluffy but I guess lately I must be missing her more. Suzanne

My spouse and I, while on the first vacation we’d had in years, left our cats with a friend, who, unfortunately for our psyches, had never had a pet in his life.  So, we flew to Paris, and were overwhelmed by the fun we were having until halfway through the trip.  Then we both awoke to horrible nightmares about the cats escaping from our friend’s house (he didn’t know not to leave the windows open for house-bound cats).  We actually figured out the time difference and called him to find out how the babies were doing–sigh. . . You bet, and like yours they usually involve traveling with the cats.  I just had one where the cats were with us as we travelled by boat, and we had to take them off the boat in pillowcases :o because we had no carriers.

<snip Go figure; my cat dreams usually involve trying to round them all up and get them into carriers while a mob storms our house with torches. Linda Cox

I’m glad I’m not alone with this.  I have similar dreams with my dog as well as my 3 cats.  When I had parakeets (pre cats and dog), the dreams were with them.  In fact, sometimes I have dreams where I get the birds and cats mixed up.  I’ve had the "have to round them up" type dreams, and dreams where one runs away.   One of the worst was when one was being taken in a carrier to be left at a shelter!!  I guess I was feeling a lot of anxiety that day.  When I woke up, I gave Bootsie lots and lots of extra hugs, and she acted like I was nuts.  (-: Kami — Vizit Bootsie, Gizmo, Sassy, canine pal Princess, and some of their fur friends at http://www.users.interport.net/~kamiscot/petpage.html Spam Protection On…. Last night, after a dreadful day, I dreamed that my little Sweetie and I had to get out of a broken-down car, and I had to carry her in my arms until my husband found a cat carrier.  She kept crying and squirming around in my arms, trying to get down, and I *knew* if she got down she’d panic and run away and be lost forever.  My husband found a carrier but, as we tried to put her in it, she turned and bit me through my thumb and into that web between fingers and thumb.  I cried and wanted to explain we were only doing this so she could be safe, but she kept biting me. I actually woke up with tears running down my face, I was so unhappy I couldn’t tell her she’d be all right and please to stop biting me.  It was very strange, not the least because she’s never bitten anyone, no matter how scared she gets at the vet’s.  Does anyone else have stress "cat danger" dreams?

Well it wasn’t a nightmare, but this dream was was so bizarre I have to tell it.  I dreamt that our 3 month-old kittens were wearing flannel pajamas!  As if a kitten isn’t cuddly enough already!  The dream was very short, but it was a powerful, if somewhat embarrassing, image that lasted with me for days… those little flannel sleeves ending in cuffs near the paws. Rated NC-17 for excessive coziness. — Warning to bulk emailers:  I may contact you to discuss this posting.

Oh, what a treat!  Reminds me of an old "Fernwood Tonight" episode in which a visiting cancer researcher (complete with white coat and nerd paraphenalia) pontificates on how polyester causes skin cancer.  By way of proof he brings on a rat in a cage, and gives more details on his methodology and data. Then he allows as how the test subjects themslevs have sensed the danger in the experiment and — by way of proof — takes the rat from the cage and demonstrates how it struggles to avoid being forced into a Ken-doll (as in Barbie and Ken) high-fashion polyester suit. All these years later, I still laugh to the point of tears recalling how impressed (King of Pastel Polyester)Martin Mull and Fred (the nerd) Willard were. Maybe it was based on a dream one of the writers had.

We never had pets while growing up, but my mother used to have a dream about my brother and I in times of stress.  Michael would start walking faster and faster (as a child he only had 2 speeds — stop and as fast as possible) and I would start walking slower and slower.  No matter whom she went after first, the other would be gone by the time she came back.   I guess these dreams are proof (as if more were needed) that cats _are_ part of the family! My cat dreams usually occur when my neutered buddy has been away from home for anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks.  I have a dream that I open the door and he is there waiting for me–come home again.  It has yet to fail me that the following day after the dream, he ends up coming home. Weird, huh?

Response:

This is not so weird.  My Damien cat accidently got out one night (they are indoor cats) and disappeared for two days.  I was frantic because he is a very curious cat and I figured I would never see him again.  Then the second night he was gone I dreamed he came home all covered in dirt and cobwebs.  The next day he appeared out of the cellar (which we had purposely left open) dirty and with cobwebs on himself.  Imagine?!? Response:

I don’t think any of this is wierd. Cats have abilities that we may have, but have forgotten how to use.  They are obviously communicating with you, letting you know they will be home, so make sure to have the litterbox clean , and fresh food and water waiting :-)

I dream of my cat often in times of stress. She always appears in my bad dreams as some ind of angel, a stable and fearless figure that guides me.  Funny thing about her is she was given to me at one of my lowest times by someone who bought her, a purebreed siamese, who decided not to keep her and they heard how much I love animals, so they gave her to me and she was just the best thing ever, still is,even in my dreams…

HA! … Well, that’s another topic altogether.  His getting out of the van and whatever he was doing was of no consequence in the dream (at least I don’t think it was … HMMM????) :-) Carol

One dream is actually a skit from a comedy show I once watched (Golden Girls I think).  Someone microwaves my little Cuddles. Another nightmare is about the landlord or some well meaning person forcing me to give up my cat for my health.  The new owners mistreat my cat and she dies or she dies of lonliness.  Then I am the first person in my family to contract Cancer and die. Another nightmare is an all to real possibility.  My cat contracts some disease that is either 1) curable or 2) not curable like diabetes, but treatable.  I can’t afford the treatment, and I have to put the cat down because I can’t afford to save its life! I have to look in every nook and cranny for my cat and won’t stop looking or calling her name until she comes out looking bewildered.  Like she’s saying "What the hell you want at this time of night?!!!" I recently had a dream that my big loveable lug of a cat, Maurice, was sitting in the passenger seat of my boyfriend’s van with me.  We were parked in a parking lot … my boyfriend had gotten out of the van to do something (not important in the dream).  All of a sudden Maurice leaps through the car window and runs out into this big open field.  He’s having a grand time chasing butterflies and rolling in the grass, basically frolicking around.  I’m watching him, torn between letting him stay out and enjoy himself and going to catch him and bring him back (in waking life he is an indoor cat and sometimes it makes me sad that he can’t go out to play).  All of a sudden this bird of prey (not sure if it’s a hawk, eagle, or what) swoops down and picks Maurice up by the scruff of his neck and carries him off.  The dream ends with me watching the two of them become a smaller and smaller speck in the sky.  I just stood there horrified and feeling so helpless.  It was very sad and I was very relieved when I woke up and Maurice was safe and sound.  I gave him a very big hug and paid extra special attention to him that morning! – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Anybody ever have dreams or nightmares about their cats?  Mine usually happen

A few years after Pet Sematary (yeesh!) came out I had to put down the firstborn of my companion (who out lived her daughter by about 8 years… whew!). Little Kitty (yes, she was a *monster* cat) visited me in my dreams about 10 days later… I opened the front door to let her in and realized she was absolutely filty, covered in dirt and smelling of the garden. In my dream, I scolded her soundly and sent her back outside to clean herself up before I’d let her  in again. I woke and just lay there barely believing I’d just done that! I dream about my other animals (alive and dead), but have not dreamed about LK again. Rats. I will someday… and I hope she accepts my apology. . The dreams you’re having, though… this is a simple trick, but it works: say something positive before you go to sleep (like "I will dream about my cats tonight, and they will be happy, healthy and safe with me… and if I dream otherwise, everyone will be ok") and see what happens. It doesn’t take an awful lot of concentration or effort… our subconscious minds can be very alert. Your dreams might also be reflecting a real and fearful thing going on in your life… so rather than wait for a dream to spur you into midnight hunts for reassurance, go get some right now! You probably deserve it! I don’t know what’s going to happen five minutes or five days from now… and I’ve learned from my pets that all I really have with them is *right now*, and in my book, that’s plenty of reason to go hunt one down right this minute and wallow (proudly and with great abandon!) in some luvin’ time.
