Question:
Colostomys can be done at any area of the colon – transverse, ascending, descending, sigmoid – the higher up the more liquid the stool – the closer to the rectal area the more formed and less chance of dehydration. The function of the colon is to absorb water, potassium and salt. The less colon you have the more chance of dehydration. "S Gonsalves" <sgonsal…@snet.net> wrote in message

Oops. I hit reply to sender the first reply. Sorry. This is for the group. Thanks for the advice. Some of the terminology is foriegn to me. What is an Eakin seal? I Don’t have any uneven skin or wrinkles around the stoma so for now I think I will not use the paste as long as it works. I changed my wafer today, it lasted one week. Is that about normal? It is a colostomy that is done at the sigmoid portion of the colon. That is what I have too. It makes it possible to irrigate and not wear a full size pouch. Just a stoma cap. Serv (C) "Marc" <mar…@mosquitonet.com> wrote in message

Hi My name is marc and I had surgery Nov 30th. It was rectal cancer and I had a ABR. They took it all out. It was kind of a surprise that they did take out everything as I was expecting an iliostomy. I knew there was a possibility but … Oh well. Now I have a colostomy to deal with. I had my surgery at the Northwest colo-rectal clinic in Seattle. They were very profesional from the Dr.’s to the nurses. It made the experience bearable. I am back home in Fairbanks Alaska now recuperating. I am able to work a couple hours a week but don’t want to push it too much. After reading every post in this group it sounds like a nice group. I have a question. The video I got from convatec shows a paste being used on the wafer before you stick it on. My ET didn’t explain this. What is this paste for and do I really need to use it? Thanks in advance Marc from AK
Response:
Usually, paste is only needed if you have uneven skin in the peristomal area. Here are a few things that work for me. (1) Less is better — I get much better wear time when I don’t use pastes, powders or skin barriers — even framing tape. (2) The big exception is Eakin Seals. Many people on this newsgroup have found that Eakin Seals are magic with respect to comfort, prolonged wear time and minimizing skin problems. (3) Wafers with convexivity tend to reduce leakage even for people with normal stomas.
Response:
Stomahesive paste simple provides additional protection for the peristomal area, area around the stoma to prevent breakdown from the diestive enzymes. Just as a baby gets diaper rash so will we, around the stoma, if stool gets on the skin. The more liquid the stool is the more chance of leakage. With a colostomy, especially a sigmoid colostomy where the stool is solid there is not as much chance of breakdown. The paste also helps the faceplate adhere but there are some who do not find it necessary. "Marc" <mar…@mosquitonet.com> wrote in message
