Weekend Trips Near Madison, WI

Categories: Prostate Cancer

Question:

I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for weekend length (2 to 3 day) backpacking trips staged out of Madison, Wisconsin.  I like to fish, but only hiking is fine, too.  Any ideas are welcome.  I’m willing to drive a bit, as long as I can get there in time to set up camp that night! Thanks for any ideas! Paul :) — Paul Robert Thayer              University of Wisconsin – Madison http://www.engr.wisc.edu/~thayer

Duluth, MN is about a 6 hour drive from Madison and the 200 and some mile Superior Hiking Trail starts just north of Duluth in Two Harbors. Crosby-Manitou State Park is a good destination for a weekend hike. The park is backpack only with a number of remote campsites and also has a couple of lakes with pretty good fishing. The Baptism River runs through the park and has fairly descent trout fishing. Crosby-Manitou is located about 45 miles north of Duluth in Finland, MN.

Try the Porcupine Mountains in northern Wisconsin, or the Superior Hiking Trail along the north shore in Minnesota.

If you want tremendously good fishing AND hiking, try: Sylvania in Ottawa National Forest               7 Hours Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park  8 Hours Nicolet NF is also worth a look. Chequamegon is vastly overrated, and filled with waaayy too many people from Hayward. :-) If you don’t mind hearing cows and cars from time to time, try: Kettle Moraine State Park                              45 Minutes If you want to Day Hike, try: Wyalusing State Park                                       2 Hours Devil’s Lake State Park                                     1.5 Hours Blue Mounds State Park                                    30 Minutes Yeah, they’re crowded with Flatlanders, as is the Kettle Moraine, but at least you don’t have to drive all day and all have great views! If you just want to fish, Monona Bay is (arguably) as good as anything you can get elsewhere in the state.  (Opinion, not fact.) Some overlooked spots include: Yellowstone State Park                                     2 Hours The Breakwater at Manitowoc                         4 Hours Anything south of Sheyboygan has scary levels of Cadmium, Lead, and PCBs, although Little Bay de Noc and Green Bay have plenty of crap from the pulp mills and foundries. Don’t even ask me how many 30+ lb Salmon I caught, cleaned and ate as a kid growing up in Racine. I’m looking forward to enjoying prostate and liver cancer. + – ( — Isle Royale National Park by Web http://www.nyx.net/~sjhoward/Isle_Royale/

One of my personal favorites in the area is Governor Dodge State Park. Beautiful scenery, caves, nice trails, a couple fairly clean lakes. Sometimes a bit crowded, but many of the people that crowd the place tend not to actually go out hiking along the trails.  Go figure. http://terracom.net/~vcstegem Have a Purpose, and your life will be Purposeful Have a Meaning, and your life will be Meaningful
