Thyroid cancer recurrence-first update

Categories: Metastatic Cancer

Question:

My heart is starting to break. I just received a call from my husbands’ doctor with the first test results on his recurrence. Not very good. The chest x-ray shows a small (3mm) nodule in the upper right lung. This was definately not apparent on the last chest x-ray taken early last year. His calicitonin levels continue to climb, (up another 5 points from last month) The doc says this very well could be an early metastis showing up on his lung. He has ordered the actual films to veiw and will be doing a CT scan within the next week or so. The doc tells me that the lung is a common site of mets with this type of cancer (medullary) and combined with the increased calcitonin levels it is likely that this new nodule is a tumor. We are waiting for the other results of blood work done yesterday, they will probably be in by Monday. In the meantime…… My heart aches. I’ve been thru the loss of a spouse before to this disease and I am just looking for strength at this point. Thanks. Karin

Oh, Karin, my heart breaks for you, too. I am so sorry to hear about your husband’s latest setback. I hope for both your sakes that this is something treatable either with surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation. I wish you all the strength in the world to handle what comes next. I wish I could climb through this computer and give you a hug and a pat, but I can’t. So, here’s a cyberhug that will have to do You and your husband are in my head and heart. Oh wow Karin – that is tuff news. I have just started reading Jean Bolen’s "Close to the Bone" – you might want to get it.  Lots of good stuff in there. I went to see Dr. Yeo at UCSF, and with my 22 year malignant and metastatic history, increased values of radiation being taken up by the tumor sight with each I-131 scan, and now my throidgobbulin being positive for the first time in my history – Dr. Yeo and Dr. Greenspan are of the opinion that I am growing healthy thyroid tissue – and that this is not a reoccurance of cancer. Though the cancer question can not be excluded they admitt. But hey – according to them I am a living miracle – regenerating healthy tissue.  I think of them as sick fucks.  Sounds like you got a better doctor. I am going to keep this for my next medical visit and have my calcitonin levels accessed along with the thyroidgobbulin. I dont know if you are in a cancer support group or if your husband is – but people live longer and do better in them – then outside of them. This is from the white man’s medicine stats. And as an addendum –  I have refused a massive dose of radioactive iodine to "burn out" the suspect tumor and have always gone for surgery cept for this latest tumor – it under the sternal notch and not a good place to go cut on – and it so far as not metastaized or seems to be a slow grower – and I am of the opinion it is slow growing because of the alternative treatments I subject myself to – to the tune of $400 a month that my insurance company sezs is not medicine – but the MD who gives part of the therapy to me as well as the State of California sezs it is. If you want to live longer and have a better life – wake up the sleeping giant. Cancer is what it is in the United States because of the Bilge Rats on the Ship of State and their Pat Robertson presidential monarch and his Spearchucker God. They like killing you and your husband for money. It’s how the Beast – 666 goes to the Armageddon until people wake up. And wake up the sleeping giant.
