det, I think that variety is great.  I like your list so far.  I think that exercise should be enjoyable.  I enjoy riding my road bike when weather permits and I think that you’ll have fun on your mountain bike.  I’ve been doing spin class and elliptical at the gym.  I use my Palm as my MP3 player and I mix up the music :-)  I was doing aerobics clases but I got bored with that.  I may add one day of aerobics back in (instead of elliptical) come February.  I do a bit of walking (with dogs) as well. They keep me on my toes!  :-)  For me having some classes to attend is relatively important becasue it feels more like a commitment to me but to some extent just adding it to my calendar is helpful.  Anyway, I think that mixing things up is a great plan! Hello Det,   Mt. Hood is beautiful.  I’ve been across it a few times and have seen it from Portland too.  It sounds like you have a lot of fun ways to keep active.  I’ve never used an elliptical but they look fun and like they give a harder workout than a treadmill.  I can’t breakup my exercise routine since I have a small disability.  Walking, stairclimber, pilates ball, and resistance bands are what I’m using to lose weight.  Hopefully with time I’ll be able to expand my exercise capabilities as the weight comes off.   I use to enjoy hiking, running, sky diving, scuba diving, skiing, and biking and would like to be able to do those things again. det, i am not sure this will help you at all, but maybe someone i am 55yrs old and DO NOT want another hobby, and certainly NOT a hobby of routine exercise, so this WILL NOT help anyone who like gyms, or routine exercise as "a hobby" or social i KNEW that eating properly is where i needed to start. a WOE that i would use for the rest of my life. i am your typical CARB ADDICT and in the past, if i started my day with carbs, i have either eaten carbs all day or whenever triggered or spent my days, with that HUNGRY feeling. finding a LOW CARB WOE made perfect sense to me and was my answer. i am no longer hungry, nor obcessed with eating. i no longer TRIGGER that feeling, and if it happens, i recognize it and take action to stop it. i have been LOW CARBING for the past five years and during that time, have come to accept that exercise is a MUST in my life. finding exercise that I WILL DO, AND ENJOY was a trick! (with much ass kicking over at ASD-LC, i did, and i do!) i walk no less than 3X’s a week. two miles at a time, going at a rate of 4mph. i attempt to get two 20 minute sessions of YOGA in weekly.(at home, via VCR tapes) www.yogazone.com (my yoga is my substitute for stretching and  for weight lifting, as my body is quite enough weight to lift and control!) these are the basic things that i do for myself. i have come to accept them to be as routine as brushing my teeth! (i still have the occasional mental lazy battle) am i skinny? NOPE! (i’m in good shape, 5′10" in size 12-14 jeans) do i intend to be skinny?  ever? NOPE! Unlike many people, I am a huge proponent of home exercise equipment.  When I would go to the gym to use the treadmill and other machines, I spent as much time driving in traffic as I did exercising.  Also, your clothes don’t have to match when you are at home and for those with younger children, childcare is not an issue.  For those of us with older children who did not do well in physics, there is a slight danger when placing a cat on a moving belt but that’s another story for another time. I look at magazines while working out or watch TV.  I can keep my cell phone with me in case a client calls (I think cell phones in the gym are obnixious).  If I am in the mood, I can talk to selected friends and family members who don’t mind me breathng hard.  Note, do not pick up a call from a client until you are breathing normally.  They will think you are either trying to seduce them or send an ambulance to take care of you.  When you are done, your shower with all your familiar stuff is right there.  Home exercise equipment operates in almost any weather condition save those that knock out power.  Good equipment costs money but not everyone needs the very best.  For instance, treadmills designed to take the abuse that running offers are more expensive and sturdier than those that are made just for walking.  I bought the latter since I don’t run.  Finally, you can exercise free of allergens, smog, etc. in your own home. One word of caution.  Exercise equipment does not typically come assembled. I spent an entire day putting my treadmill together and still don’t know how I did it.  The fee for someone else is about 100.00.  I would have gladly paid it but no one could get to my house for several days and I had already spread all the pieces and parts on the living room floor before I determined that it was a task not easily performed by someone with my mechanical inexperience. j – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text –

Um, which symptoms am I displaying exactly?  Not that I will get your response – I don’t every see your posts unless someone else responds to them.  I don’t have you killfiled though…  However, in my post I don’t really see where I show any signs of sad.  I will tell you that I spend more physical time outside during the winter because of skiing, than I do in the summer.  I can’t tan because of melanoma, and I get as much sun as I can here in the pacific nw.  So, you wanna qualify your statement? det

You said it,   Usually a change in routine is what I do when things get stale.

Every client I have ever had I have told that unless you have the equipment, of some sort in your home, you will eventually get "gymed out". Especially if you are a working (employed). One word of caution.  Exercise equipment does not typically come assembled. I spent an entire day putting my treadmill together and still don’t know how I did it.

Sounds like you’ve got a good plan already…good to hear you’re pulling out of the doldrums. I added weight training and on Monday I start rock climbing classes.  I also do different kind of treadmill workouts varying speed and incline.  Lately I started working out with a group of women a few times a week.  It helps keep things interesting. Martha It’s one of those indoor climbing walls.  The class is offered by the community college and is going to cover all of the basics of the equipment and we’ll be using the wall.  There’s a trip in May or June up to a place to do some real rock climbing.  It’s all I have to work with here in the middle of nowhere and I thought it would be an interesting diversion.  I’m not expecting to be able to do any serious trips out west or anything :)  As far as a workout goes, I figure it will be like volleyball, nothing major but it involves movement rather than sitting around and it gets me out to do something. Yeah, that’s wall climbing. From what I hear, (I haven’t tried it yet), rock climbing is much, much different because there are few rocks as steep as walls. The difficulty measurements in wall climbing, as well as a lot of techniques are very different form actual rock climbing. I haven’t done rock climbing either, but I’ve done wall climbing a few times since I started in November. It’s one of those indoor climbing walls.  The class is offered by the community college and is going to cover all of the basics of the equipment and we’ll be using the wall.  There’s a trip in May or June up to a place to do some real rock climbing.  It’s all I have to work with here in the middle of nowhere and I thought it would be an interesting diversion.  I’m not expecting to be able to do any serious trips out west or anything :)  As far as a workout goes, I figure it will be like volleyball, nothing major but it involves movement rather than sitting around and it gets me out to do something.
