det, I think that variety is great. I like your list so far. I think that exercise should be enjoyable. I enjoy riding my road bike when weather permits and I think that you’ll have fun on your mountain bike. I’ve been doing spin class and elliptical at the gym. I use my Palm as my MP3 player and I mix up the music I was doing aerobics clases but I got bored with that. I may add one day of aerobics back in (instead of elliptical) come February. I do a bit of walking (with dogs) as well. They keep me on my toes! :-) For me having some classes to attend is relatively important becasue it feels more like a commitment to me but to some extent just adding it to my calendar is helpful. Anyway, I think that mixing things up is a great plan! Now, I have been bad about dog school. My poor lab has missed for the past two weeks. Class is held outside and her class is at 7:30 on Thursday nights. Last week it was just too cold and last night I just felt yucky (head cold-ish). Next week I have tickets to a hockey game… <sigh I may have to see if I can get her into a makeup class. I plan to retire her this year but I’d like to finish her CD and U-CD first. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – We all go through cycles – many people start their weight loss endeavors GUNG HO, but after awhile, things get a little stale. I really commend those who stick to their plan, months and months on end, without wavering.
Hello Det, Mt. Hood is beautiful. I’ve been across it a few times and have seen it from Portland too. It sounds like you have a lot of fun ways to keep active. I’ve never used an elliptical but they look fun and like they give a harder workout than a treadmill. I can’t breakup my exercise routine since I have a small disability. Walking, stairclimber, pilates ball, and resistance bands are what I’m using to lose weight. Hopefully with time I’ll be able to expand my exercise capabilities as the weight comes off. I use to enjoy hiking, running, sky diving, scuba diving, skiing, and biking and would like to be able to do those things again. Take care, Paul

det, i am not sure this will help you at all, but maybe someone i am 55yrs old and DO NOT want another hobby, and certainly NOT a hobby of routine exercise, so this WILL NOT help anyone who like gyms, or routine exercise as "a hobby" or social i KNEW that eating properly is where i needed to start. a WOE that i would use for the rest of my life. i am your typical CARB ADDICT and in the past, if i started my day with carbs, i have either eaten carbs all day or whenever triggered or spent my days, with that HUNGRY feeling. finding a LOW CARB WOE made perfect sense to me and was my answer. i am no longer hungry, nor obcessed with eating. i no longer TRIGGER that feeling, and if it happens, i recognize it and take action to stop it. i have been LOW CARBING for the past five years and during that time, have come to accept that exercise is a MUST in my life. finding exercise that I WILL DO, AND ENJOY was a trick! (with much ass kicking over at ASD-LC, i did, and i do!) i walk no less than 3X’s a week. two miles at a time, going at a rate of 4mph. i attempt to get two 20 minute sessions of YOGA in weekly.(at home, via VCR tapes) www.yogazone.com (my yoga is my substitute for stretching and for weight lifting, as my body is quite enough weight to lift and control!) these are the basic things that i do for myself. i have come to accept them to be as routine as brushing my teeth! (i still have the occasional mental lazy battle) am i skinny? NOPE! (i’m in good shape, 5′10" in size 12-14 jeans) do i intend to be skinny? ever? NOPE! (been there, done that, and its ridiculous, unhealthy and ugly) am i obcessed? NOPE!

Unlike many people, I am a huge proponent of home exercise equipment. When I would go to the gym to use the treadmill and other machines, I spent as much time driving in traffic as I did exercising. Also, your clothes don’t have to match when you are at home and for those with younger children, childcare is not an issue. For those of us with older children who did not do well in physics, there is a slight danger when placing a cat on a moving belt but that’s another story for another time. I look at magazines while working out or watch TV. I can keep my cell phone with me in case a client calls (I think cell phones in the gym are obnixious). If I am in the mood, I can talk to selected friends and family members who don’t mind me breathng hard. Note, do not pick up a call from a client until you are breathing normally. They will think you are either trying to seduce them or send an ambulance to take care of you. When you are done, your shower with all your familiar stuff is right there. Home exercise equipment operates in almost any weather condition save those that knock out power. Good equipment costs money but not everyone needs the very best. For instance, treadmills designed to take the abuse that running offers are more expensive and sturdier than those that are made just for walking. I bought the latter since I don’t run. Finally, you can exercise free of allergens, smog, etc. in your own home. One word of caution. Exercise equipment does not typically come assembled. I spent an entire day putting my treadmill together and still don’t know how I did it. The fee for someone else is about 100.00. I would have gladly paid it but no one could get to my house for several days and I had already spread all the pieces and parts on the living room floor before I determined that it was a task not easily performed by someone with my mechanical inexperience. j – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text –

Things I’ve considered: – home cardio equipment. I was thinking about an elliptical – jump on it every morning for 20 minutes, don’t have to worry about weather, doing my hair, or childcare – join a body pump class. weighted cardio, and participating with a group might help keep up enthusiasm – I’ve already joined a ski club of sorts – I’m getting involved with ski patrol on mt hood, and that’s a workout in itself – have a mountain bike, would like to get involved with a biking club What kinds of things do you do to shake up the routine? det

Yeah, that’s wall climbing. From what I hear, (I haven’t tried it yet), rock climbing is much, much different because there are few rocks as steep as walls. The difficulty measurements in wall climbing, as well as a lot of techniques are very different form actual rock climbing. I haven’t done rock climbing either, but I’ve done wall climbing a few times since I started in November. It’s difficult, but very fun. — Martha From the Conan O’Brian show: The new ad slogan from the Florida Orange Growers: "It’s not the orange juice, it’s the waffles, lardass." www.bastmagazine.com – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text –

Also, I had a good friend called Chris. My first ever boyfriend, and a friend for half of my life. I helped nurse him as he died from metastised melanoma…he was a smoker too, which wouldn’t have helped his chances. And like you, I was tired of feeling awful, feeling weak, feeling out of control of my own life. Hugs Paula

Yeah I know, made myself cry too. I know I’m getting depressed when I watched Home Alone 2 and I so wanted to cry when the kid meets up with his mom at Rockafeller (?sp) Square. I’ve seen the movie 3 or 4 times, but now I’m getting emotional on the smallest trigger. Can someone spare a Pamprin? It just keeps getting worse and worse every year. It’s more than just smoking, but smoking is most of it. I’ve seen first hand what it’s like to die from cancer. I loved Dorothy so much… And I fear this kind of death most of all. I could not continue to lie to myself anymore. Smoking was slowly killing me. I want to live be cause I’m too chicken to die. Gary Tic toc, tic toc… It’s been One week, four days, 23 hours, 22 minutes and 11 seconds since I quit CT. I’ve not smoked some 275 cigarettes, saving me about $37.18 so far. My life expectancy has been extended by about 22 hours, 55 minutes. (No, I’m not Super Man, thought I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.) — Awww Gary. You made me cry again. In some ways, I see your quit as a tribute to Dorothy…she wouldn’t want you to have to go through the same kind of suffering that she did. My special reasons…well there are many. I have a lovely husband who truly takes care of me and adores me. I want to be with him for a very long time. Hugs Paula

A man from Texas, driving a Volkswagen Beetle, pulls up next to a guy in a Rolls Royce at a stop sign. Their windows are open and he yells at the guy in the Rolls, "Hey, you got a telephone in that Rolls?" The guy in the Rolls says, "Yes, of course I do." "I got one too . . . see?" the Texan says. "Uh, huh, yes, that’s very nice." "You got a fax machine?" asks the Texan. "Why, actually, yes, I do." "I do too! See? It’s right here," brags the Texan. The light is just about to turn green and the guy in the Volkswagen says, "So, do you have a double bed in back there?" The guy in the Rolls replies, "NO! Do you?" "Yep, got my double bed right in back here," the Texan replies. The light turns and the man in the Volkswagen takes off. Well, the guy in the Rolls is not about to be one-upped, so he immediately goes to a customizing shop and orders them to put a double bed in back of his car. About two weeks later, the job is finally done. He picks up his car and drives all over town looking for the Volkswagen beetle with the Texas plates. Finally, he finds it parked alongside the road, so he pulls his Rolls up next to it. The windows on the Volkswagen are all fogged up and he feels somewhat awkward about it, but he gets out of his newly modified Rolls and taps on the foggy window of the Volkswagen. (It’s OK, the joke is CLEAN) The man in the Volkswagen finally opens the window a crack and peeks out. The guy with the Rolls says, "Hey, remember me?" "Yeah, yeah, I remember you," replies the Texan, "What’s up?" "Check this out . . .
Will do hon…already added your new email address from your email yesterday… It’s ok though. I like thinking about Chris because he taught me to love VW’s…hubby and I have a lot of fun because he loves Morris Minors so we have this ongoing war. DH came into my life just as Chris was leaving, and has been a tower of support – long story but it’s a sweet one Hugs Paula

I stopped because hadn’t lost weight for the last 10 of 12 months I was doing it, so I got pissed off. Did you gradually add carbs back in during your maintenance phase, but didn’t pay enough attention and added too many back in?

Don’t quit! I gained 18kgs (nearly 40 pounds) in 9 months, because I binged on all the forbidden foods, I think out of defiance since I was so POd about sticking faithfully to LC for a year and losing bugger-all. I’ve been back on it now for about 16 months and am nowhere near my previous starting weight yet. Though I didn’t lose weight for the first 14 months this time around either, I’m sticking with it. If things get unbearable I might do it CAD-style for a week or two, but for me low carb is just the way I eat now. Rachel (New Zealand)

For me it was getting depressed at not getting to spend holidays with my family two years ago.. I decided I was going to enjoy the holidays, eat what I wanted since I knew I could lose any of the weight I might gain.. I was doing this much more strictly than I am this time and it was easy to let it go.. Took me almost two years to get it back together and start losing again.. slower this time, but easier to handle. This time around, Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners are going to take the place of my weekend semi-to-hell-with-it meal. It hasn’t hurt me to have one meal on the weekends where I eat what I want.. usually that just means going ahead and not subbing out the baked potato if we go out.. or eating a couple breadsticks if we go to Olive Garden.. etc. Teeb

I did it because I mistakenly told myself "never again" would I eat certain foods (that I was not sensitive to) rather than spacing it out. I’ve gained 6 pounds over the past 4 months. For me, low carb is about appetite control, not ketosis or never having certain foods ever again. (barring my sensitivities). I am sensitive to enough things on this earth, so why add to it? I am now rewriting my WOE to include the things I swore off, only less often, so I know I "can" have it. I now have a once a week free day where I can count calories but eat the foods I want. The rest of the time it’s low carb.
I guess you could say I fell off the wagon. I first LC’d in the 70s, I think, maybe even earlier. I just viewed it as a diet, something to do until I achieved the desired weight that I could then ignore. Of course, I told myself I could just go back on again, that I would keep track of my weight and do so, but that did not happen. Of course, we know what happens then…. I LC’d 1-2 more times with the same philosophy and the same result. Then I thought about it again for several years, fearing that since I was older, more could go wrong. I was relieved to see the positive studies that started coming out, and then got back on. But now I see that this has to be more than a short-term fix. It has to be incorporated into my life. I expect I will occasionally eat higher-carb things when I am satisfied with my weight, but I will not make the the norm. I haven’t quite figured out what my initial approach will be though. First, I somehow would have to do "safe" experiments to see what has the tendency to derail me. — Jean B.

I was on Atkins 4 years ago and lost 50 pounds – did really well, I thought, but was very bored with the diet, as I had stayed on induction for the entire 6 months that I was on it. One night at work, the dietary department had left a full tray of scrumptious cake desserts in the pantry refrigerator. Seeing that ocean of cake before me was too much, and I snapped. I ate three pieces in a row and would have kept on except I thought I was going to be sick. I went home depressed and disgusted and stopped Atkins and basically just said the hell with it. I gained the 50 pounds back and then some. This time (8 weeks now), I’m trying to do it smarter and cutting myself some slack. I’m about 75 pounds out from goal, and I didn’t put it all on in 6 months, so there’s no need for me to think I need to take it all off quickly. I read the South Beach Diet book, and the physiology of carbohydrates made better sense to me than the way it was explained in The New Diet Revolution. Having read that one again just recently, the explanations are about the same, but I think the testimonials in the South Beach diet are more engaging and I related to them more. I have degenerative disc disease in my spine and I will eventually need surgery – it’s sooner rather than later now, so losing weight now will make the surgery go better and make healing easier to accomplish. I am also a Type 2 diabetic, with a strong family history of diabetes. I do have plenty of time to improve my way of eating, so I’m trying to be logical, and as structured as is practically possible. I did two weeks of induction, and I try to keep my carbs in the 30-40 range. Considering that it used to be nothing for me to practically live on a diet of carbohydrates, I feel like I’m doing pretty well. The things that I do differently than before – I do eat sugar free chocolate sometimes. I take my own food to work with me and if others have brought carby snacks or desserts – I eat my own food first so that I’m not "hungry" – then if I still want something, I have a small portion. I have done that twice in the last 8 weeks. Once was a piece of cake – the other time was fresh peach pie. Neither episode sent me into a carb frenzy, and I went straight back to my WOE and didn’t look back. My weight loss is slower this time, but I think it’s okay. I’m making progress, and my blood sugars are staying in a good range. Of course, tomorrow is going to be a trial, and I’m debating how I want to handle the dessert table. I’m not sure if I’ll have one of something or bites of several things, or nothing. It will depend on how I feel at the time. Regardless, I’m not going to beat myself up about it if I do want to eat a little more carby than usual. I’m just going to stay with my WOE and keep my eyes forward. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it, DebH 296/284/210

Luna, I low carbed for 3 years and maintained a 20 lb weight loss the whole time. What pushed me off the diet was an increasing problem with having no energy at all combined with frustration that I couldn’t lose any more weight. At the time I thought that if I could get to a healthier weight my diabetes might improve, so I really wanted to lose at least another 10 lbs. After a special lab test showed that I had very high insulin and low blood sugar two hours after eating a high protein, no carb meal, my doctor encouraged me to think that Metformin might help with the insulin resistance, high insulin, weight loss and other issues. I started Metformin and immediately started having more trouble with low blood sugars (in the 60s and low 70s. Normal is mid 80s.) I started eating carbs to balance out the lows and since the Metformin appeared to control my blood sugar, I decided to eat at a higher carb level–more like 150 grams a day. I felt much better on this regimen. My energy and mood were 100% better–except that I gained 10 lbs within a few months. I ended up stopping the Metformin because the lows were scary–I’d feel like I was going to pass out. Plus, it was pushing up my cholesterol and my fasting blood sugar was going up. After that I used another drug to control blood sugar and continued to feel really good. I maintained my weight 10 lbs higher than where I’d been when low carbing for six months, but eventually a major stressor–melanoma–led me to gain another 10 lbs. At that point my blood pressure went completely out of control. This time low carbing I realized that the lack of energy I had from low carbing was due to *low* blood sugar caused by high insulin and figured out that the high insulin was caused by eating too much protein which was converting to glucose in the body and catalyzing insulin release. I have kept my protein much lower this time than I did in the past, which has helped. I also monitor low blood sugars as assiduously as high ones, and found that if I can nudge them up as soon as one starts (with my "two gram cure") I don’t end up with low energy all day. I also am letting myself eat small portions of just about anything every now and then so that I don’t build up the huge feelings of deprivation that I had after 3 years of no bread, cake, pastry, ice cream, or other forbidden foods. I don’t have a problem with bingeing on anything but ice cream and certain candies (which I avoid!) so I can do this, and I’ve found that because I know that I can have the occasional off plan treat I don’t feel any need to go off low carb in a big way. At the end of my 3 years of low carbing I had gotten to where I could barely stand to look at a piece of meat or cheese and longed for grains, fruits, pasta and upscale veggie food. I’ve also found that my energy level is much better, over all, at a level around 50-60 grams a day, rather than the 30-40 I used to eat at, though I have to watch calories more carefully at the higher level. In short the big problems I’ve had to deal with were: 1. Low blood sugar which worsened the longer I low carbed 2. Stalling above where I wanted to be 3. Feelings of deprivation for many foods that grew very strong after a couple years — Jenny Cut the carbs to respond to my new email address!
– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – These are some questions for those who lost weight on low-carb at one point, then for some reason went back to high-carb and gained all or some of the weight back. When you stopped doing low-carb, did you stop because you saw it as a "diet" and now that you were thinner you thought you didn’t have to do it anymore? Did you stop because of something stressful in your life and you needed comfort foods and didn’t care about losing weight anymore? Did you gradually add carbs back in during your maintenance phase, but didn’t pay enough attention and added too many back in? I’m curious about this because I want to know what potential roadblocks are ahead so I can try to avoid them if possible. For those who quit low-carb and are going back to it, what advice would you give to people like me who don’t want to ever fall off the wagon in the first place? — -Michelle Levin (Luna) http://www.mindspring.com/~lunachick http://www.mindspring.com/~designbyluna

It is looking more and more like osteoporosis, though. I teasingly refer to my father as The World’s Only Anorexic 65-year-old Male. Both he and his wife are almost obsessed with staying slim and trim. They work out togethe twice a day, live on supplements and special frozen meals, etc. At 6′2", my dad weighs 150, which I think is way too skinny, and he could use another 20 or so pounds, but what do I know. ANYway, what I really find interesting is what he broke. His femur broke at the intertrochanteric area – which is where my first serious bone mets showed up, and which cracked after I had my Dynamic Hip Screw installed. I’m wondering if Dad and I, who share a lot of other physical characteristics, especially weaknesses, might both have a weakness sort of thing in the bone there that makes it easy to break, or in my case, makes it vulnerable to metastasis. Any thoughts?

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Ok this is going to sound really shallow.. but I am curious to what others think. Which is less physically attractive? Stretch marks or skin/flab? Also, if I had a tummy tuck when all weightloss is said and done, could they do anything about the stretchmarks? Because I honestly don’t think I will ever get rid of the flab totally, even as much as I exercise. Maybe I wont need a tuck? A tummy tuck will get rid of all the skin below the belly button – and all the stretch marks there too. I’ve already looked into it… I think flab is less attractive. When I achieve 18% bodyfat, and have maintained there for a few months, I will reconsider a tummy tuck. det

Just remember – in lue of the excess skin, tummy tucks leave one hell of a scar across the abdomin. If you are hoping to be a bikini wearer – then you might want to consider other alternatives.

Yeah, but that’s only for a couple years – the scar will fade to almost nothing, and will be hidden by panties. For some of us, it almost seems a viable/acceptable option… det

Well, I have both–that stubborn flap of tummy flab that refuses to shrink with the rest of me, and it’s covered with spidery-white stretch marks from two kids and too many potato chips. I know I’ll never have surgery, so I’ll have to find alternative methods of reduction. I added pilates to my exercise routine to see if it helps re-shape me–or at least teaches me to suck it in and not slouch. And someone on this group mentioned that moisturizing really helps to reduce the lines and keep the skin supple…we’ll see. Amy (sucking in…)

It’s something I suppose I’ll end up facing too. Stretch marks, major flab, drooping breasts (OK, they droop now, but it’s only gonna worsen…) and a lovely 6" vertical scar on my lower belly from my hysterectomy.
I personally find skin flab to be less attractive than stretch marks, stretch marks can be hidden to a small extent with tanning, or some creams (the effectiveness can be debated) One thing people might look into is a burn centre. Where I am (Ontario Canada) there is a clinic/hospital that specializes in burn victims, and if you meet their criteria, they will basically do a tummy tuck (or what ever else you want to tuck) covered by health care (I know Canada is different from the states in terms of cost) and they use the skin they remove for skin grafts on burn victims. Just something to look into if it is available in your area. Is it vain, yes, but so what? We all do something that is vain now and then, if it makes you feel better then go for it, how you feel about yourself in my mind is more important than what anyone else thinks of you. myrrha — Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
Uh, so far you have saved 219.60 with your cigarettes and not smoking for a period of time makes you a better candidate for surgery. In six months, you might very well have saved enough for surgery or at least a big dent! Shallow? Yes. You’ve already met one huge goal with the smoking. You are working your way to another really huge goal. When you reach it, if you want to spend a little time indulging yourself, well? Everything you have done thus far had been through very hard effort and everyone in your immediate family will reap the benefits. If you want to spend the time and money to be selfish and indulge a whim, go for it. You deserve it. My personal opinion is that you would be the same person with or without flab but if and only if, it would make you feel really good about yourself, it is worth your time and money. The amount of flab that never goes away is largely dependent on the person. Give it time. Eat well. Emphasize foods rich in Vitamin C for collagen production and E for scarring and zinc for overall healing. Stretch marks do eventually get to where they are far less obvious on most people. I remember an aerobics instructor who was thin and very well built. One day I crossed her path as she was coming out of the shower. In my life, I have never seen uglier breasts. (I’m a nurse. I’ve seen lots of naked folks!) They were small but sagged to her waist with stretch marks that looked like a road map. Other than that, she was absolutely beautiful. A year or so later, she had them lifted, tucked, etc. against her husband’s wishes. He loved her the way that she was and didn’t want her to undergo the risk of surgery for what he thought wasn’t important. She, on the other hand, made her living being very conscious of her body and they bothered her. Since she did it for her and was well aware of the risks and benefits, I can’t begin to criticize her decision. j

Ok this is going to sound really shallow.. but I am curious to what others think.
Which is less physically attractive? Stretch marks or skin/flab? I have a similar question — whether the stretch marks and extra skin/flab are or aren’t preferable to a Frankensteinian scar across my lower middle.

I’ve got a different question: would I prefer a tummy tuck or eye surgery to ditch the glasses? Let’s see: one would improve my ability to see and improve the look of my face and the other would, um, do what again? Seriously, my suggestion for a flabby striped belly is two-part: during the day wear clothes and at night turn out the light. Wendy

Ok, i found this: http://www.bodyfatguide.com/LooseSkin.htm I pray it’s true and I’m giving it 2 years. I’ve seen the scar from my friend’s tummy tuck and imo, it’s no better than having a little extra skin.
After photos you might have seen were probably not very long after. When I had my laparotomy (incision similar to a C-section), my doctor was kind enough to give me a plastic surgery close, instead of the usual staples. For the first few years, it looked like a red line about the width of a fine point magic marker. After several years, it faded to looking like a slight crease, and it’s barely noticable.
Be very careful about choosing your plastic surgeon. The scar should be hidden by your bikini. Part of the job of the plastic surgeon doing a tummy tuck is to leave as little scaring as possible. Of course it will also depend on the amount of skin you are having removed. Just make sure you preview alot of his work and talk to some of the ones you see with good and bad examples of the work.

IMO, it’s a good idea to maintain at least a year or two before doing anything drastic like this. This way you may have maintained solid healthy habits by then and not gain the weight back. I am not saying that you will gain it back, but do give yourself enough time to see if your healthy habits will still stick then in spite of anything going on in your life, especially if you have a history of gaining and losing weight over and over again. I hear of many people losing weight, not waiting long enough for long-term maintenance to take hold fully, having PS, and then gaining the weight back with worse results. Seems like a waste of money, pain, and time to me in this case.

I’m a bit younger than your husband (just on the near side of 30) but not terribly healthy. I am very pleased to have made it now a year without needing to head into a doctor for something more serious — and am due for a bi-annual checkup in November. Fortunately, no prostate stuff at my age, and my wife is in getting her masters’ in Nursing so with any luck by the time I start needing them…

LOL Tai. While I agree with you that women tend to get checked out more frequently, what is often overlooked is our overall health. Our reproductive area is the focus whereas, how many of us women go for actual physicals. Sure, I got to my yearly gynecological exam but that far from covers what needs to be checked overall. As far as my husband goes, he has to be checked either every year or every two years for his job although it’s not one of those big check ups either. He is almost 44 like your husband. I forced him to go to a dermatologist, made the appointment and went with him. He didn’t have melanoma, but it was the step before. I now force him to go to his twice yearly checks and I do go yearly due to all of the sun that I used to get and now sometimes get. I think that women often overlook their own health, while focusing on the health of their children and spouses. It’s far easier to focus on them than on ourselves. I have put on a few extra pounds in the last couple of years and find it increasingly harder to work out and eat less, as I am supposed to do now that I have turned 50. I was told to have a colonoscopy this year but EWWWWWWW the thought of it makes me ill. I know that it’s a good thing to do but the stress revolving around it is probably worse than getting it. While I know I *should* do it, I’ll probably be harder on my husband to get his Yeah, tmi, I guess

Rudy, I’ve joined a new gym that offers caliper body fat analysis instead of the machine analysis. They made a big point about how it isn’t accurate if you get measured after eating or drinking anything in the morning.
I’ve joined a new gym that offers caliper body fat analysis instead of the machine analysis. They made a big point about how it isn’t accurate if you get measured after eating or drinking anything in the morning.

Well, if you get tested at the same time of day after having eaten roughly the same amount of food it might not be strictly 100% accurate, but it would definitely provide a consistent figure (and reference point).
Heh, that’s why I took the machine test. Anyway, I believe the machine test I took also measured the water content of my body. My gym said their machine (electrical device) was extremely expensive ($3500 _more_ than their previous device).
I had a caliper- measured body fat analysis and it was helpful to me, because although my overall BMI was within normal limits, all my fat is around my middle and I found that I really need to change my shape to reduce my risk of stroke and heart attack. I’ve already had cancer and have been cancer free for 7 years now. So I really want to keep that situation going! I have one of those "apple" shapes but since being on a low carb diet, it is really changing! I’ve lost about 4 inches in my waist. Although I think I may need a "skin tuck" at some point – if I win the lottery or something! Anyway, I found the whole fitness analysis helpful – they pointed out areas where I need to be stronger and what I can do to accomplish that. I have been working on posture and core body strength. Laurel

Laurel, Congrats on 7 years of being cancer free! That has to be so comforting. I had two surgeries for melanoma last fall and though the doctor tells me I am fine now, I keep running into "helpful" people who tell me about friends and relatives who were told the same thing and are now dead. <sigh I’ve got the apple shape too and the waist area seems to be the very last to lose weight. I finally lost another half inch in the waist this month, but that’s after losing a good ten pounds since the last measurement change. However, I’m told that the real problem fat is around your inner organs (and heart) and I hope some of that ten pounds is from losing there. — Jenny 168.5/141.5/138.5 Third Goal 9/1998 – 8/2001 and 11/10/02 – Now http://www.geocities.com/jenny_the_bean How to calculate your need for protein * How much people really lose each month * Water Weight Gain & Loss * The "Two Gram Cure" for Hunger Cravings * Characteristics of Successful Dieters * Indispensible Low Carb Treats * Should You Count that Low Impact Carb? * Curing Ketobreath * NEW!
I suspect that their concern would be that your TOTAL body weight would be up a couple of pounds and that would in-turn effect the calculations on what your BF/LBM pounds end up being. They’re going to get the BF% from the caliper test and then work out your BF/LBM pounds from that number and your total body weight. I’m assuming that since I’m low carbing my body water percent is lower than normal anyway so this will skew the figure. Is this true? If so, is there an adjustment you make to counteract it.
What gets measured in caliper test is the subcutaneous fat between the skin folds. Being LC might have a very small measure of difference on your skin’s thickness, but I would say that its so small as not to matter — remember caliper measurement has an error range of 3-5%, or higher depending on the tester. On LC your muscles are likely to hold less water (due to less glycogen) that that effects bio-impedance test — the Tanita scales are often way off for LC people. What would really matter is where you are in your glycogen levels when you’re tested. If your muscles are very depleted when you’re tested, then you get tested a few months later right after a carb-up day, then its going to look like you’re added LBM when you really haven’t — you’ve only filled you’re muscles with glycogen and water. So I’d say test when you’re really depleted. What they should have told you that’s important is that you shouldn’t exercised before being measured. You skin folds will be greater due to the skin’s response to trying to cool the body down from exercise — your skin will have a greater thickness from dilation. A couple of suggestions: – Have the same person test every time. – Make sure they test the same area at least 3 times, more if they’re getting a wide range of mm reading. – Try to get a 7 site test if possible. — Rudy – Remove the Z from my address to respond. "It is better to die on your feet than to live on your knees!" -Emiliano Zapata Check out the a.s.d.l-c FAQ at: http://www.grossweb.com/asdlc/faq.htm

Have you tried the internet? I’ve had more luck buying specialty equipment/clothing on the internet rather than local shops. I’ve also found things on the internet and then had the local bike shop order it for me. Here’s one site that carries better quality protective gear. Inline skating is not a big sport around here so it’s very limited on what you can find in the local stores. http://www.fogdog.com/family/index.jsp?categoryId=701129&cp=970751 – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hope eveyrone had a safe and healthy weekend – a long one at that.
believe me – since I’ve had 2 melanoma’s removed – I’m generally very careful. But one thing I didn’t consider this weekend – I had 30, sport, waterproof and applied a couple times. BUT – when its 90+ degrees, I’d lean back against the vinyl boat cushions and the sweat and vinyl would rub it off – so I’ve got a bit of a burn on my back. nothing major - and nothing anywhere else. Just where my back rested up against the seat.
  – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I hear ya. It’s so easy just to put some on and then forget about it. Which, of course, is the wrong thing to do. I’m really, really trying to put it on much more often. Martha The hard part is that area of your back that you can’t reach by yourself. Generally I’m on the boat in a tshirt and clothing and try to stay in the shade alot. But – diving, swimming, etc means lack of tshirt… and just my bathing suit. My face, arms, shoulders, the rest of my body is all just fine – but the area of my back – right about brastrap level is what’s sore – which of course means – bra strap rubs on it and make it sore.

Yep, that part seems to get forgotten. I’ve even found a good face lotion that isn’t greasy, core plogging, and it doesn’t burn with successive applications – Its also sweat proof and doesn’t sting the eyes when you sweat – its called Ocean Potion, Face Lotion. Works well.

heehee…it’s going to be loads of fun. As it turns out Anthrax and Death Angel are playing at the House of Blues. So I’m going to see them with a friend of mine from Century Media Records. It should rock. Martha – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text –

Well, thanks. I don’t mind hugs, I just mind people who wallow in their stuff. I’m actually feeling fine now. I only have a tiny bit of itching and a little bit of residual pain in my left armpit that I can barely even feel. The rash has subsided substantially; those antivirals really do the job. Just like there’s all kinds of bike riding, there’s all kinds of skating. I plan to get out on the ice tomorrow, but I don’t plan to go for bear. I skipped my lesson today because I know that I couldn’t take the ass wupping that I get from my coach! I didn’t mention it to anyone, but around 6 weeks ago we found out that Marty had a recurrence of his cancer, so he’s going to get a couple of rounds of chemo under his belt before we go on vacation the third week of June. I’ve already taken him to Sloan Kettering, and I’m looking into other centers and clinical trials, but first we’ve got to get him treated. So the journey continues . . .
OK – glad to hear you are taking it easy – yet still staying active. The skating is probably good therapy for you – takes your mind off of life and lets you focus on *you*… Enjoy it.
I hear ya. It’s so easy just to put some on and then forget about it. Which, of course, is the wrong thing to do. I’m really, really trying to put it on much more often. Martha

The hard part is that area of your back that you can’t reach by yourself. I’ve even found a good face lotion that isn’t greasy, core plogging, and it doesn’t burn with successive applications – Its also sweat proof and doesn’t sting the eyes when you sweat – its called Ocean Potion, Face Lotion. Works well.

Seriously, I do not always appreciate your presentation of facts although your facts are never in question. Still, I respect your opinion and I am genuinely sorry that you are having to go through this with your husband. I am so very behind on the CA thing. Hearts are my clinical specialty.
Jay Jay and Martha, Thanks for the thoughts. It’s not that I "suck it up" and go on, I’m just not made to sit and wallow. When I got the news about Marty I spent about 20 minutes feeling sorry for myself and then the emotion passed. I’ve always been this way. Maybe it’s genetic. You can’t control these someone else’s illness, so my way of coping is finding a way to deal with it. In this case dealing with it involves getting Marty treated, keeping vigilant over the research to make sure I know about anything promising, and then realizing that the rest of it is not in my hands.l This way of dealing with adversity is just ingrained in me. I don’t know where it comes from, it’s just the way I am. It’s not just in dealing with someone else’s adversity, I’m the same when it’s me. I’ve been lucky enough to be pretty healthy, but whether it was anaphylaxis, a hysterectomy, the shingles, or whatever, I always put my first efforts towards dealing with it and getting rid of the problem (if that was possible). Now I’ve never had cancer myself, or another very serious chronic illness (outside of allergies, which for a while I thought might kill me), so I can’t tell you for certain how I would react if in that situation. But my guess is it would be pretty much the same. I figure if you’re wallowing you’re not living. So I’ll do my wallowing after I’m dead. There will be plenty of time then <G. But that doesn’t mean I don’t very much appreciate the good wishes and prayers. I really do! Thanks again.
Jay Jay, I am taking care of myself, that’s why getting the shingles now kind of got me off guard. If it had happened last summer, when Marty was in the hospital for 10 weeks, and everything was going to hell every day, I would have understood that. But now, I’m getting plenty of sleep, I take my vitamins religiously, get regular exercise and good nutrition. And this is the time I got them! Of course, it would have been much worse had I got them last summer, because I really didn’t have the time for it then.
treadmill. I know this is ghoing to sound shallow, Erica… OK, so it *is* shallow… But a walk in daylight is a *lot* better than a treadmill ride under a UV lamp.
