Question:

The reason we are doing the challenge is to raise awareness of Children’s Chronic Arthritis. I worked with Alex the other day on the boat and I have to say that it is a very tough condition to live with.

I have arthritis, and I do not consider it a disability. I still have two arms and two legs that function reasonably well. It’s just pain. No big deal. — DAVe http://personal.mia.bellsouth.net/mia/d/r/drsi/

Are you needing quadruple joint replacements in the next few years? No? Consider that other people’s conditons may be much worse than yours before you crap on them. Dan — It’s better to be quotable than to be honest.                 — Tom Stoppard

You mean if it gets to the point where my joints all need replacement you will build a boat for me to sail around the world? Gee thanks! — DAVe http://personal.mia.bellsouth.net/mia/d/r/drsi/

Response:

I think you have missed the point. Alex is building his own boat, raising the finance etc… He is just looking for support in raising awareness for this disease.

I guess I did. Best of luck to you both. — DAVe http://personal.mia.bellsouth.net/mia/d/r/drsi/

What sort of handicap? I think a blind guy already soloed the Atlantic. However, there is a fellow who calls himself ‘Jax’ who, if he qualified as a   sailor, might draw a lot of contributors on this forum chipping in just to see him gone for a while. pm – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -Hi Guys, I am involved in putting together a challenge so sail round the world non-stop, single handled by a disabled sailor. Can you lot come up with any good tips in the form of safety idea and equipment apart from the obvious such as liferafts, beacons, flares etc…?? I look forward to your posts. Stephen Sumner ps if anyone would like to lend their support you can find out more at www.ransbyoceanchallenges.com

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Our sailor has Chronic Arthritis. Stephen, don’t take this the wrong way, but that is not a handicap likely to elicit a lot of support. I used to know a man with one arm who raced Force 5s (a small tippy boat like a Laser). I have met a blind sailor too. I don’t want to seem unsympathetic, but with events like the Leukemia Cup to support, this does not seem like such a noble cause. Fresh Breezes- Doug King

There’s a quite famous guy in Italy, Ambrogio Fogar, who is completely paralyzed due to a car incident. Before the incident he had sailed around the word (among other extreme actions he had….) and (if I correctly remember) two or three years ago (after the incident) sailed along the Italian coast in a sail boat. I think you could try and search for his name to contact him. Actually he’s promoting a lot of initiatives to help disabled people and I’m sure he would be happy to give you some suggestions. HTH, Rocco.

How "disabled"? It makes a world of difference in the planning IMHO. — DAVe (my father was a quad)

???? That web link was generally useless (land slide tsunami?) As one who grew up with a disabled father I have been around LOTS of disabilities. Arthritis is not generally high on the list. — DAVe http://personal.mia.bellsouth.net/mia/d/r/drsi/

Response:

Alex has restricted movement in his joints and they become very painful if strenuous work is carried out.
