Question:

Since cats often eat carrion in the wild, I wouldn’t worry about bacteria. I’m so happy about your kitty. But, it is unlikely that food left out for part of a day grew enough bacteria to harm him in that way.

Response:

I remember they were slightly, just slightly, dented.  A couple oozed.  A couple smelled bad after opening.  One when opened was entirely liquid (yuck!)

Yesterday evening when I saw Amber he looked like death warmed over; like he wanted to crawl into a hole and die. But the vet said it was time to start force feeding him with a/d food; which they did last night. When I stopped in this morning, I opened the cage and he sat up and looked alertly at me!! His ears were forward and his eyes were open a lot more; although the sclera still covered part of the eyes. He has passed no more bloody tissue, just a little normal fecal matter. His temperature is up to 102. I am so encouraged. I had been praying all the way to the vets. What an answer!

Hooray!!! Quick question, you don’t have air conditioning in your house? Is that why the food spoiled? I’m asking because we feed our crew canned food twice a day, and they never finish it at first. So the food sits in the kitchen floor for an hour or so, sometimes even more. Should we be feeding them less more often? They hate cold food though… — Victor M. Response:

The vet is now positive he got a nasty bacteria from spoiled food. They said with this heat wave there have been some nasty ones going around. I am going to be scrupulous at picking up leftover cat food dishes. As well as people leftovers. There have been a lot of times when I am rushed of a morning that I put their canned food down and hit the road. If they leave it til later to eat, it would be spoiled.

Thank goodness Amber is recovering. Sometimes it takes up to 48 hours for the antibiotics to kick in, but when they do, the cat shows a big improvement. Yes, that’s what I was thinking it sounded like–a bacterial infection. Especially if it responded to Baytril. And when you said your cat vomited something that looked like rotten meat, I thought perhaps he had eaten something spoiled. Good luck–it sounds as though he’ll be coming home soon.

This afternoon when I saw him he was a bit more active and had drank a bit of water by himself. He is not really thirsty with the IV. He was probably just washing his mouth out after being forcefed. This time they begged me to do it. He ate half of a syringeful…about 10ml. He is very strong but did not use claws at trying to push me away. But it was very difficult. He has no appetite and is nauseous; although they are giving him something for that and for prevention of ulcers in mouth and tummy. He now gets his antibiotics subcutaneously. His IV was changed to the other leg. They did a leukemia test and it was negative. With his body temp normal they took away the heating pad. Now he has a thick folded towel they change frequently and a chux pad. He seems to like the cage. When I picked him up to cuddle him he wanted back in the cage. I guess he thought I was going to do something to him like the vet and the techs do when they take him out! The vet said when he is eating by himself he can go home. Please pray for him to get an appetite for a/d. He will be on that for awhile. CATherine

Response:

I’m so happy about your kitty. But, it is unlikely that food left out for part of a day grew enough bacteria to harm him in that way.  Rather, I’d strongly consider looking at the canned food–what brand is it?  Have you ever noticed any problems with the cans?  Etc.  Poor canning creates a laboratory for bacteria! I recently was buying cat food  by the case from Petco.  They had their own brand but several cans were bad–VERY obviously.  I returned them, but kept buying the brand.  Soon it disappeared from the shelves.  It seems that others were having this problem. Even more recently I noticed the same thing happen with the cat food at Trader Joes.  I never bought a bad can from them, though. I wonder if there is a way to figure out who is processing these brands (and possibly other, name, brands) and avoid them?

Thanks for the update – this sounds *so* much better than last night! :-)  I hope it -is- (merely) an infection – which can be effectively battled w/ antibiotic(s) & supportive care.  Here’s also hoping Amber’s nausea will abate & that he’ll then regain his appetite soon. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Yesterday evening when I saw Amber he looked like death warmed over; like he wanted to crawl into a hole and die. Since cats often eat carrion in the wild, I wouldn’t worry about bacteria. I’m so happy about your kitty. But, it is unlikely that food left out for part of a day grew enough bacteria to harm him in that way.

When our cat had a nasty bacterial infection, my vet said it could have been caused by any number of things. Salmonella is possible, but healthy cats are usually resistant.Once in a while normal bacteria in the cats’ own intestines can cause an infection. Many times you never find out the actual source of a bacterial infection.

CATherine

His temperature is up to 102. I am so encouraged. I had been praying all the way to the vets. What an answer! The vet is now positive he got a nasty bacteria from spoiled food.
