Finally, a sub-20 minute 5K! (hooray)
Question:
Great Job Jose! I have yet to break the 20 min barrier. My fastest time was 20:14 and I am still working on it. By the way you can hear more about me at my web site at http://members.aol.com/troubl78/swb.html Prophet VII "I am that I am"

I did it! I finally ran a sub 20 minute 5K. I ran a 19:42 on Thanksgiving day.
Congrats! <BTW, I’m jealous. I got down to the low 20’s in my "youth" but never could get that 19 and change. Now that I’m "historic", I don’t have much hope of ever doing it. Hi Jose, This is me Pascal. We did exchange mail last year about the Marathon. I am making progress too. I run just about 20 min. in a weekend. My goal is still to do the Marathon in 3:15:59 (Boston for me). I did speedwork, I do 6:00 pace 1/4 mile, 6:12 pace 1/2, and still then can’t make the last one (I have failed two times at it). Thanksgiving in Houston was terrible. I waited for the cold to come to do the speedwork. So, how many mile repeats do you do @6:15 ? It sounds petty with Houston and probably Austin Marathon, I will enter a few 5 and 10K to "cash in " all that work on shorter runs. Happy runnings, Pascal.

I did it! I finally ran a sub 20 minute 5K. I ran a 19:42 on Thanksgiving day. Trust me I was thanking the Lord Almighty for this one. I have been working on this for quite some time now. My running coach has been helping, too. He sets the pace and I run on his heels most of the way. I run alot of 4, 6, and 8 milers. I only do and occassional speedworkout. My speed work comes in the distances we run. He has helped me develop a more efficient stride as opposed to a shuffle. Don’t ask me to match up against a very effective shuffler. These guys can waste you. I know I ran with a guy almost 15 yrs. older than me and he used to leave me in the dust endurance wise. Anyway, I am still doing my LSD (long slow distances for all you 60’s throwbacks) on weekends and do mile repeats at about 6:15 pace with a 1:30 to 2:00 recovery, every other weekend. My coach said the key now is to minimize recovery between repeats. I have had a strong base coming off of triathlon training this past summer. I sure wanted to nail the coffin with an 18 minute run, but the conditions were too humid. Yep, that’s Houston, Texas for you. No respect for the time of the year at all! Jose’ A.
