Warning: Women's sensitive issue

Categories: Endometrial Cancer

Question:

I think I’m just becoming paranoid, but is there any known link between diabetes and heavy menstrual flow? *sigh* I’m thinking waaay too much about the impact of diabetes on every little thing, and I am having a really crappy day. Ann

Probably not really, but if you’re a T2, all that excess circulating insulin can cause menstrual problems.  It’s either feast or famine with me.  If I don’t take progesterone regularly (like 10 days out of every month), I don’t have a period and the lining builds too much… It’s so variable from woman to woman that it’s hard to say if DM "causes" it. Thanks Elissa and Beth, I’m just stressed at present, and today turned out to be a worse day than yesterday….but I won’t get into that. At least things can only improve from here. Ann (fingers crossed) — Have a nice day :-)

Hello, Annie. As a point of information,  I learned from both my internist and gynecologist that women with diabetes have an increased risk of developing endometrial cancer. As best as I can determine as a non-medical person, it isn’t certain whether the increased risk is from the diabetes or from the obesity that accompanies Type 2 in many people. In any event, women (diabetic and non-) who notice an unexplained change in their menstrual cycle/flow are advised to visit their gyne. I hope it’s just a fluke and that everything with you is just fine. And I hope your day gets better! Regards — Elissa Type 2
