Nicky has been eating solid food since Monday, chicken nuggets, pizza, hot dogs!! The Foley is OUT, the epidural is OUT and he will be HOME for good on Thanksgiving. He’s not liking the pouch very much and doesn’t fully understand that it’s going to be there for a while but he’s really happy that he doesn’t have to poop every 10 minutes. He looks like he might have gained some weight as his face is much fuller, but that could be the effects of the Prednisone. Did I mention that the hospital has a support group for parents and children? He’ll be attending his first meeting of the "Pouch Patrol" in 2 weeks where he’ll get to meet and play with other kids who are in the same or similar situation as he is. It’s amazing how fast kids heal! Less than a week ago, he was fading away right before our very eyes and today he’s almost back to the bright eyed little boy that he was 5 weeks ago. MUCH to be thankful for. Gramma Tracy

Hello everyone, Last week I posted for the first time about my 5yo grandson, Nicky who was dx with UC. Thank you to all for being there for us. Since he went into the hospital on 11/9, he has had 2 transfusions, and broke his little arm when trying to get to the commode. This kid just can’t catch any good luck. The prednisone isn’t working. They started him on cyclosporin (sp) but that isn’t helping either. Tomorrow (Friday) he will have the first of 3 surgeries. Tomorrow they will remove his colon. Once that heals, they will go back and do the "J" pouch surgery. While this is all just too horrible, I think the surgery is the best bet as now we won’t need the steroids and we won’t need to worry about colon cancer. He’s been a great little trooper about all of this and I’m looking forward to seeing our happy little boy again. Please keep my grandson and my family in your prayers.

Thank you so much! The procedures were explained to him today and he is actually looking forward to it except for the part where they "cut my belly". He’s just so tired of poop and pain and wanted to know if they could operate today! The surgeon (with a Pooh Bear tie) spoke at length with him and Nicky is really ok with the surgery. There’s a 9 year old that is coming up for his reconstructive surgery soon and that little boy wants to come see Nicky to explain about the stoma, etc. So, things are looking up, FINALLY! Hang in there, Gramma — and let Nicky know he has a whole family of people with the same problem that he does, and we are all praying for him and wishing him the best! That we are sending hugs and all! Oh, and remind him what a near scar he’ll have after they "cut his belly!" Mine curves around my belly-button! Seriously, give him a big hug and kiss from all of us here. Are thoughts and prayers are with him and you and your whole family. love, steve preferred e-mail address: without the "SPAM," of course! too much sanity may be madness, and the maddest of all, to see life as it is and not as it should be.
