Alt for Brain Tumor?
Question:
FROM Vieve: I read that in Britain and in Europe the drug called "acetaminophen" was taken Off the market. Reason being it caused tumors. Why hasn’t it been taken off the Market in Canada and the U.SA.? Eight months after I was given a quanity of this drug. I was operated on for a tumor in the colon. Canada and USA have had an epidemic of tumor operations Medical care is big business, and getting bigger each year. I wish your father well.

Hi Vieve, Where did you read that "acetaminophen" or tylenol was taken off the market? I’d like to see that article especially for the references of the drug causing tumors. Pat
Response:
Acetaminophen, aka Tylenol et. al., has not been taken off any market. Here is one interesting article I found regarding colon cancer and Tylenol. "SAN FRANCISCO — Acetaminophen may join other pain relievers in playing a beneficial role in colon cancer. Unlike aspirin and newer anti-inflammatories, however, acetaminophen appears to shield the intestines against cancer-causing substances, rather than inhibit cancer development, according to new research presented at the 91st Annual Meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research here. Errr…..Vieve…was this posting of yours actually helpful to anyone? Puh leeease, negative, hysterical postings of this type, unreferenced and vague do nothing but frighten people. Acetaminophen causes cancer??? An epidemic of tumor operations???? Sheesh! Back to the origional posting: Meningioma’s are the "safest" form of brain tumour to get. Most often they are slow growing and in many instances do not recurr. The main (mechanical) difference between a meningioma and glioblastoma (the rapidly fatal type of tumour, which grows from a different type of cell) is that a meningioma is "well defined" ie it has a clearly defined boundery between tumour and not tumour – glioblastomas on the other hand, are poorly defined and infiltrate surrounding tissue, hence their malignancy. Thus removal of a meningioma usually *does* remove all the cells. Some meningiomas will recurr – but they are slow growing and the only ones i have seen removed twice were from a person who had the first occurance whislt very young, and subsequent removal was many years later – but of course there will exceptions to every rule. Removal of a meningioma will depend of where it is within the brain. I can only recall 2 instances where removal was not totally possible – one was left alone, because the age of the person (70`s) suggested that the benefits of removal outweighed the risks (removal meant that healthy area of the brain would be damaged during the procedure), and because this tumour would grow a lot slower than this lady aged. The other case, the tumour was "debulked" only, in order to protect the hippocampus (an important area relevent to memory). I cannot remember a single case where the patient died, suffered permant neurological injury or suffered any permanent problem as a result of the surgery. In neurosurgery, we regarded benign neuromas as "routine" cases – up and about within 2 days, stitches/clips out in three (usually). Every person undergoing surgery was frightened by the prospect and would have rather done anything else but have surgery – this is quite normal, few of them actually enjoyed the experience. Understandably. My advise to your father is simple: If your neuro team advise surgery – take it. I understand your concern about what is "causitive" remaining untreated, but some things just don`t work this way….maybe a tumor causes itself? Who knows..? Best wishes, Andrew Austin.
