Question:
Hi, everyone, I am a volunteer for our MS Assn. working on our web site. My assignment is to work on the Alternative Medicine section, specifically mercury amalgam, DHEA, and meditation. We want to have links to other sites as well as providing summaries of views on these treatments. I’ve done some searches on the web and have a number of sites, but I wanted to see if any of you have sites you think are especially good. Have you seen any reports on these treatment modalities that would give a novice some ideal about them? Thanks in advance. This group is always a fount of information. Irene

Irene, I don’t want to be cranky, but it concerns me to see meditation listed with mercury amalgams and DHEA. Tooth pulling and DHEA are probably alternative medicine. I think that meditation is more properly "complementary" medicine. It is often part of a holistic approach to MS treatment that includes traditional medicine. It also helps in cancer treatment and in pain control. It can even help when there is no diagnosis of disease to reduce stress and promote health. There is excellent scientific evidence that meditation lowers blood pressure and heart rate, slows and deepens respiration, and even changes brain wave patterns. I do not believe that comparable evidence for the efficacy of amalgam removal or taking DHEA exists. Before you send MS folks to those sites — some of which are very strident — you should check out their clinical credentials. Kate
