Sweet grumpy nursemaid

Categories: Cancer Treatment

Question:

My DH put his back out this morning while helping some friends with their luggage as we gave them a lift to the airport :-( ( so has been in bed all day – just got up a few mins ago. Cocoa, my very grumpy and touchy elderly lady, has been sleeping *right* next to him on the bed all the time, purring in time with his snoring and getting up to ‘bouff’ her head on his when he wakes up. What a sweet nursemaid! Meanwhile, in between ministering to the wounded I’ve been enjoying ‘Africa Calling’ at the Eden Project via Real Player: http://www.bbc.co.uk/cornwall/content/articles/2005/06/16/live8_eden_fea ture.shtml ..not only fantastic music in a good cause, but Peter Gabriel into the bargain…yeah :-) ))) Deb. — http://www.scientific-art.com "He looked a fierce and quarrelsome cat, but claw he never would; He only bit the ones he loved, because they tasted good." Response:

My friend Kim who is battling cancer recently became foster mother to Bueller, her sister’s cat due to some financial difficulties on her sister’s part. (Bueller is a big sweetie pie who tries to pretend he’s very macho, and now it seems he’s a first-class Nurse Cat.) One day, Kim came home after a shopping trip with her mother, and lay down on the couch for a nap, feeling quite wiped out. She was joined by Bueller who curled up on her chest and started purring as hard as he could. He’s also been spending nights with Kim in her bed. I think he’s trying to apply "Purr Therapy" to her lung tumors. =o) Melissa

Bless him! They do seem to know when gentleness is needed don;t they. Purrs for Kim’s battle to have a swift, successful outcome. Those purrs have to help! It is so marvellous that even these grumpy old girls can turn themselves into nurse kitties, isn’t it? KFC jumped on my tummy at every opportunity.  I had to turn her off because it was too painful.  She jumped up again today, it is not exactly comfortable yet, but I let her make biscuits for a few minutes.. They just know somehow. Tweed

Alas, Kim needs all the purrs that can be spared.  She’s a determined fighter, but she’s facing some scary odds.  She’s already gone through a year of chemo and radiation in 2004, until last November when her cancer stopped responding to the treatments.  Then she had a stem cell transplant over last Christmas which was initially successful.  But the Hodgkins was back less than four months later.  Because of the transplant, her bone marrow can’t withstand an adult-strength course of chemo, and the cancer seems pretty aggressive. THey’re hoping her sister will be a good stem cell match for her, once they boost Kim’s strength a bit so that she can go through yet another stem cell transplant.  But her treatment options are rather limited.  But Bueller apparently feels he has to take responsibility for Kim’s care, since medical science is of limited help to her.  The kicker is, she’s not yet 30. Life is stinking unfair, sometimes. Melissa
