Leg injury question
Question:
I recently started running, and over did it a little in the beggining. I’m primarily a cyclist, so my legs weren’t used to the pounding from running. I did a couple of 10k runs, and then an 18k, and felt great energy/strength wise, but after the long run, it was obvious that I had hurt my legs. I muscle/tendon pain along the inside side of one knee for a couple of weeks, but it seems to have passed. What I still have that doesn’t want to go away is a pain that runs up right behind the inside side of my ankle. Can’t really tell if it is muscle or bone. It doesn’t throb, just a strong dull pain, worse when I walk or jog. Luckily it doesn’t seem to be bad on the bike. Is this a common injury? Any ideas before I break down and start the long process of doctor/physio appointments, etc.? Please remove ‘nospam’ when replying. Really appreciate any help. I know I over did it, and I’ve already received the lectures about it, and I’ve gone and been fitted for better fitting shoes. So, again, any insight would be appreciated. Thanks, Kevin

Is it worse in the morning when you get up? If so it is likely Achilles tendentious. It is a regular problem for me. For some reason my body like it. I have had it in the elbow, shoulder and left foot. It would seem that there are several reasons for Achilles tendentious. In my case I would have to guess the primary one is due to cancer surgery I had about 30 years ago. It messed up my calf muscles. However thanks to Ozzie and his recommended massage technique I seem to have it under control. The only think I suggest you avoid (only a last resort) is the common medical treatment of shots. It is painful and not very effective. Thanks to my doctor who had the problem and had tried the treatment, I did not consider it. I don’t think it is the achilles. The pain isn’t in the rear, it runs up along side the ankle, just behind the inside ankle bone. Isn’t worse in the morning. Thanks. Kevin

Looked in my book "Running Injury Free" by Dr. Joe Ellis and he doesn’t describe anything like what you are describing. As a longshot guess it might be a stress fracture somewhere in the ankle but other than that very wild shot in the dark, I’m drawing a blank but I’m not a doctor either. I would recommend seeing a Doctor and getting an xray of your ankle so you and the Doc can peer in there to try to come up with an answer. Dear friend, Almost anything you injure with shortterm overuse will get better with shortterm recovery. I doubt you’ll need doctors appointments, therapy, injections, etc. But then you’ll get back to running and be at risk for reinjury. Please consider slowly ramping up to your goals rather than abruptly starting out with 6 and 11 mile runs! Your muscle development from biking may make you think you are up to it (and your muscles are up to it), but the other structures involved (ligaments, tendons, joints, etc) are not used to the load, the reps, or the jarring. They all need to adjust, too. Start slow, build up, and you’ll get to your goals. Best of luck. — Josh Steinberg (MD), Syracuse
