Chinese Traditional Medicines and AIDS
Question:
<In Asia, Chinese herbal medicine has been increasingly put to the test as a <way to combat AIDS. Even though traditional Chinese medicine is gaining <acceptance by western medical practitioners, there are many doctors who are <still cautious about accepting it as a viable treatment for the disease. <East is meeting West as more clinical tests on traditional Chinese herbal <therapies are showing this ancient treatment may be used to attack the deadly <AIDS virus. <Although not generally accepted in Western medicine as a proven way to combat <AIDS and HIV, chemicals found in Chinese herbal medicines are being explored <as a way to slow the virus’ progress. <Benjamin Kwong, President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Hong Kong, says <researchers are applying similar principles to the use of traditional Chinese <medicine as to Western drug-cocktail therapies. Mr. Kwong notes many AIDS <patients take a concoction of anti-viral drugs in which each chemical attacks <the virus differently, but with a combined effectiveness to suppress viral <activity. <"One single herb usually contains around one hundred to two hundred chemicals. <And in one prescription of Chinese medicine it may contain a few herbs. That <means that one single prescription of Chinese medicine could contain more than <one thousand chemicals." <Last week doctors from the mainland and Hong Kong met in the territory to <share clinical findings. At the Chinese Academy of Traditional Chinese <Medicine in Beijing, at least 40 kinds of Chinese drugs are being tested. <Preliminary tests have shown positive results. Herbal medicine compounds <reportedly slowed the virus’ growth and enhanced the body’s defense system. <But some doctors caution against being too optimistic. They say no cure has <been found and more tests need to be conducted. <The use of Chinese herbal medicine against AIDS has been gaining popularity in <the West since the late 1980’s. Patients, eager to try anything that could <help them, turned to medicines that have been known in the East for centuries <to provide health benefits. AIDS patients in the U.S. and Europe started <experimenting with Chinese medicine and reported positive results. <Practitioners commonly use the herbal remedies to boost the body’s immune <system — the main target of the disease. The immune system is the body’s <defense against infection. Chinese medicines are also used to counter the <noxious side effects of chemical therapies, including nausea and loss of <appetite. <Some doctors treating HIV and AIDS patients with Western techniques do not <advocate the use of any traditional Chinese medicine. They say the <combination of untested chemicals with the already heady mix of compounds in <Western therapies could prove a deadly combination or counter the benefits of <either treatment. <Barry Lee (Lee Man Wai), a counselor at the Hong Kong AIDS Foundation, says he <supports his patients use of alternative treatments, but advises them not to <rely solely on Chinese therapies. <"If they go to the clinic once a month, this is the only way they will find <out their physical condition. But if they only see the Chinese doctor the <Chinese doctor couldn’t tell them what their physical situation is at the <moment." <Many doctors in Asia say they would like to see more cooperation between <Western and traditional Chinese practitioners, saying each method has a <certain effectiveness. They note the importance of battling the disease <which is devastating the region. <A recent UN report warned that Burma and Cambodia could face AIDS epidemics of <Africa-like proportions. In China the disease is growing so fast that health <officials say the number of people with HIV could top one million by the year <2000. Of course, Nature Creation on Herbs is to ‘cure’ all mankind’s sickness, BUT, if you base solely on Chinese herbalist lists(where only temperate herbs are being used) or their present concept(its treatment) in treating ‘modern-days’ sickness, for sure, there are short-comings! If, we are talking about treating orthodox sickness eg. cancer or other body ailment eg malfunctioning from certain organs, well, chinese herbs or other orthodox method of treatment eg. accupuncturing, may suit fine for these sort of problem. Other than that, where most modern day sicknesses are made up of virus related diseases, traditional chinese herbs are none other better than medical science, in handling such cases. That is why, traditional chinese medicine reputation is not as, what it is expected to be a ‘cure-for-all’ type of herbal remedy. Still, there is a ‘missing link’ to it. The ‘missing-link’ is likely to be found from tropical herbs. You know why??? Temperate herbs, just like temperate fruits eg. apple, pear, grape, longan and etc.,when taken, it helps to revitalise organ functioning thru traceable minerals found in these temperate fruits. One must not forget that, it is the minerals that make organ functioning (in the body system). As for tropical herbs or tropical fruits eg. a simple pinapple (by origin pinapple grow well in typical tropical climate), when taken, it provides a type of enyzmes that ‘cleanse’ the respiratory system, under the category, as a fruit. If, under the category, of a herb eg. those ‘unorthodox herbs’, when taken, it has the tendency to cleanse but, this time (as, belonging to the herbal category), it ‘flush away’ the impurities (or unwanted aliens eg. viruses) in the blood stream. Take for example, antibiotic (derived from a kind of poisoneous unorthodox fungus strain, under laboratory condition, the toxic is being extracted out to suit human consumption) since, belonging to the unorthodox grouping, when taken, it also cleanse impurities eg. germs/bacterias (in the blood stream) but, not on those elusive viruses. Why not on viruses??? One must not forget that, by taking steriods, you are merely boosting the functioning of the organ, nothing more than that. By taking steriod it cannot be contrued as a cure!! By taking temperat herbs, you are also merely ‘correcting’ organ malfunctioning, that’s all. Therefore, you can see that, there are roles play by individual category of herb or bio-product, it has its territory of healing. The problem with medical scientist is that, unaware of these facts, they (medical scientists or researchers) blindly used temperate orthodox herbs(eg. those bitter melon, only found in temperate regions) to do research on unorthodox virus disease. Needless to say, its a failure for sure!! Where is the logic??? For those who are interested to know more, you are welcome to email me or speak thru in this media (room), no hold barred!!I also welcome enquiries from researchers (from research groups), where my role is to supply unorthodox herbs, where the active principle is being extracted out to produce in a easiler form for consumption. Danny Yang An Asian Wholistic Physician cum Herbalist (Unlike those ‘learn-by-hard’ herbalist,a herbalist that goes to the ‘Wild’ to look for herbs and from the telling of different flowers’ coloring and the type of insects ‘munching’ its leaves, you can understand the magnitutde of this herbal plant.) *The only hope for Aids patient*
