Judge Mills Lane says that depression is a "cop out"
Question:
– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I think we ALL need to educate this man. Nothing a couple HUNDRED emails wouldn’t fix!!!!!! daz snip Judge Mills Lane, during the show aired on March 4, 1999, displayed his ignorance of medical conditions and his prejudice towards the mentally ill when he declared that disabling depression was a "cop-out." Clinical depression includes several conditions that are not only disabling but are potentially lethal – fifteen percent of the sufferers die of suicide. Social stigmatization is often cited as an aggravating factor and an indicator of a higher risk of suicide. Judge Mills Lane’s statement regarding clinical depression served only to increase the social stigmatization experienced by sufferers and to perpetuate the ignorance and prejudice surrounding mental illness. Nothing quite like responsible television production, nothing indeed. kill your tv —
U.S.News and World Report March 8, 1999- report, Melancholy Nation- Phillip Gold suggests "hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis dysfunction" as the more accurate name for depression. I’m willing to go with it– Maybe "hap dysfunction?" Renaming would be not only more accurate, but get rid of some of some of the crap from people like the judge– Toci

Thank you, thank you, I thought I was the only one who saw this display display of ignorance. I was horrified at his total disregard of the subject. As he says " just bow your neck, get your ears back and put your nose on the grindstone and GET OVER IT". Thanks again for your comments on this "whant the inmates are in charge" routine. Vern

Judge Mill Lane proclaims that depression is a "cop out"! When a woman told him that she is on disability because of depression he gave her a sarcastic look, told her that depression is a "cop out" and that she just needs to put her nose to the grind stone. He then told her that she is looking for an easy way out and ruled against her because she suffers from depression! You all know how hard it is to educate family members about depression and what you are going through, then this archaic fool makes statements like this on TV! I posted this message on the "Forum" at http://www.rysher.com/judge/forum/ which is Judge Mills Lane
