So, in other words you deny that some diseases (not all) have or can have a genetic component? diseases like cancer, type I diabetes, schizophrenia, Lesh-Nyhan syndrome, cystic fibrosis etc are all completely due to the self calling sickness upon the self? No genetics needed? And if we all just follow your system the world would rid itself of disease? When are you coming to Sweden for the Nobel price? It’s, by the way, not true that knowing the complete human genome is going to rid the world of all diseases. It may help in developing new medication for genetic diseases but even more importantly it could help in developing drugs that have less side effects and are more suited for individual patients needs. Also, it can give an impression of the future in terms of disease, but ethical problems must be adressed to avoid mis-use of that knowledge. These issues need debating on a global scale. The human genome project could change the world like the steam-engine changed the world. Think about it, it may be possible to get nerve tissue to regenerate if science finds out which of those 40,000 (i thought it was closer to 30,000) genes are responsible for nerve growth in the embryo. And gene-therapy may become feasible. Not by inserting new genes, but perhaps even by getting other genes to repair damaged genes. But, 40,000 genes are a lot of genes. And since some genes are recombined to create more possible sequences (such as the genes controlling anti-bodies) a lot of work is still to be done. In fact, sequencing the human is merely a prelude to the real task: what do all these genes do? How do the end products of the genes (proteins) interact and work together? This is a formidable task and will take many years. And then there is the question of the rest of the DNA. There is much more DNA in a cell than just the genes. The DNA contains ‘junk’ sequences.
