Question:
When I drink a lot of coffee my symptoms get worse. Voices in my head come out and I get a bit of paranoia. Does anyone else have this problem with caffeine?
Response:
Yep. But I haven’t had that problem in a while. Medication seems to be working. I won’t give up coffee for anyone. I already gave up weed. "philip" <phili…@yahoo.com> wrote in message

Coffee makes me jittery, but thankfully the weed cancels it out. I also find that weed helps to calm my nerves, reduce the impact of the sz symptoms and also helps me sleep. "Gus" <b…@blah.com> wrote in message

Coffee/caffeine caused my 1st hospitalization. However, they never asked about coffee. They even had free coffee in the locked unit. I had an employer that offered free coffee to the employees. I was drinking about 10 cups per day. It took about 3 weeks to make me paranoid and confused. Now that I am older I recognize that 2 cups of coffee is too much. With meds I can handle one cup of coffee. I find it is better to skip coffee and use 60mg pseudo ephedrine for getting laundry done. It seems more stimulating with less side effects than coffee. IIRC Sudafed contains ephedrine, which is a stimulant (essentially chemically similar to amphetamine [speed/wizz]). "KSolien" <ksol…@aol.com> wrote in message

has anyone tried modafinil? i hear that that doesn’t affect dopamine levels, so i assume/hope it will be safer than meth, caffeine or pseudoephedrine.

My pharmacist knows I am on Thorazine, and I told him I needed something to lose weight (the 100 lbs from Zyprexa…ugh…it just won’t come off), and he told me to take 3 Sudafed a day. Kinda messed with me. I would rather be tired than psychotic/jittery.

Yes, of course I have experienced this often as for the last fifteen years I have abused coffee. I need a good dose of meds to stay stable. Mark Vonnegut identified coffee as a problem for us in his book the Eden Express. I do lots of things right, vitamins, no booze or street drugs, fish oil via tuna sandwiches but remain a coffee drinker sometimes having 8 pots a day. "philip" <phili…@yahoo.com> wrote in message

Coffee is intense. I love the taste but I don’t drink it. Rarely, rarely. I drink a cup of black tea every day. Once in awhile 2, but rarely. I’ve noticed with any tea/coffee that I drink, that I seem to want more and more over a period of weeks, like I get a tolerance. I really don’t think they should give caffeinated beverages to kids. I was addicted to coke/pepsi for awhile. I have never tried speed, and I never will. I first started drinking coffee at junior college to have energy, etc., to do homework. What a mess. I found that with the tea, recently, that I kept wanting more, more. First 1 teabag, then in a few weeks 2 teabags, etc…Until, 3 didn’t seem like enough, and I was so wound up tho, that I wouldn’t get any thing done…I think caffeine is the kind of thing that is enjoyable, but sometimes. But I drink a bag each morning, and then I microwave, and boil it so that I get every last bit out of it. I used my will to stop using more. Also, to save a little money. The box of 100 teabags from safeway lasts a long time when you are only having 1 a day. I wonder if coffee doesn’t have the bad affects because of something else. Aren’t the coffee beans like ‘burnt’? That I think makes them carcinogenic. I read of studies where people who eat alot of burnt/ barbecued food have more cancer. Anyway, I do like the stimulating affect of tea, and chocolate, etc. My sweetie has been drinking *alot* of chamomile teas because he no longer drinks alcohol at all. ANYWAY, those are my thoughts on coffee. I like it but it makes me feel wrong. Also, one big thing with coffee is that I always always have a big "come down" from it…Where, like I need to sleep 2 days straight to recover once I have my "up" times. I don’t know how people who drink tonz of it all the time avoid that. Any thoughts?

I find coffee gives me unpleasant migraine-like symptoms and makes the psuedo-like visual hallucinations intensify. I also find my thoughts start to race and get all messed up with inserted(?) thoughts and breaks in the thought patterns which make me forget the previous line of thought and leaves me wondering around absent-mindedly trying to figure out what I’ve just done. Strangely enough it doesn’t seem to happen with Decaf or Tea, Coke, Chocolate, etc. > Voices in my head come > out and I get a bit of paranoia. Does anyone else have this problem with > caffeine?
Voices in my head aren’t something that plague me so much these days but have come to taunt me quite a few times in the past and paranoia I don’t think I have a problem with (how would I know?). I had thought about abstaining from caffeine for a little while but, like alcohol, I guess it’s difficult; will power being a scarce commodity to me. I read an article about something like this the other week, you can find it here: http://doctoryourself.com/caffeine_allergy.html Cya! Mr X. Non-schizophrenic (in fact the docs seem to think I’ve got something different every time I visit. They’ll probably say I’ve got PMT next… <sigh>

Yeah I’ve noticed that caffeine can be harmful. We have one of those automatic bunn machines at work and there are always a couple of pots available. I try to drink no more than a couple of small cups every hour or two. When I get jittery I know I’ve overdone it. Coffee can have a hell of a lot of caffeine. A coke or pepsi 12 ounce has like 35 to 40 mg. Even Mello Yello and Mountain Dew have about 50 to 55 mg max. But a 6 oz cup of coffee can have 100 mg in it. I hear darker roasts typically have less caffeine. I don’t like the taste of decaf myself. But you could mix 50/50 caf/decaf and make your own half caf. Caffeine in high doses can cause panic attacks. It can be a powerful stimulant. I’ve seen some tests of X tablets and several contain high dose caffeine along with the other stuff. In general, sz’s seem to smoke more and drink more coffee than the general population. Michael

Hi Just Me Thanks for the suggestion but if I have a caffeine tablet it interacts with my medication and I end up pacing back and forth for at least 6 hours nonstop. I have a problem with akathasia (sp?) and caffeine seems to aggravate it. I have problems with just taking Excedrin which has caffeine in it. I can handle the caffeine in a couple of glasses of diet pepsi but it still gives me the information processing problem. penguin

Dear Buther Boy: Caffeine causes some creatures a tremendous problem. We have a veterinarian living here at this pentecostal rooming house I am living in now. He understands my problem with caffeine. American medical doctors never admitted that they knew about my problem with caffeine, as veterinarians do. Caffeine acts like strychnine in cats, dogs, lions & tigers & bears, and in me. Caffeine is my Archilles Heel! If I have as much as a chocolate chip, I’m in excruciating pain from muscle cramps and spasms. A cup of coffee would have been fatal without hospital attention, with the respiratory paralysis. The pain is so bad you don’t notice not breathing. I hate to admit it, but it is a vulnerability, like Superman’s kryptonite! I feel tottally alienated from this ugly culture, but, there are others like me: Cro Magnon people; and we are assembling against Homo Sapien tyranny. Check out http://groups.yahoo.com/group/alchemy61/ . Those "stock coders" I can now admit with glee are actually our allies coding against Homo Sapien tyranny, and there’s nothing the "pigs" can do about it. I can flaunt it in their Homo Sapien faces with revengeful satisfaction. For, our differences we have been labled "schizophrenic", but we are rising up and using our advantageous differences to overthrow Homo Sapien tyranny. When the "Old Ones" soon return we will rule Earth again, and probably earn our evil karma back all over agian by "setting things straight" (getting even), as we have done, over and over again. We do evil karma, get it back, get even for it, and get it back again, forever; and so don’t THEY in giving our evil karma back to us. Will it ever end? http://community.webtv.net/mpereira/TheSecretsofthe

IMHO in a typical scheezer part of the brain is over stimulated and part of the brain is understimulated. The overstimulated part goes to positive symptoms, the understimulated part goes to negative symptoms. Thus, caffeine should help with negative symptoms (now you do the laundry) until it overstimulates the positive symptoms (now you do no laundry because you are getting secret messages from the TV set). Thus, if I use caffeine, I balance it against a depressant. For me, the depressant is Klonopin. To get a mix of stimulant and depressant that acts in the right way probably requires experimentation. If the caffeine mainly acts on the positive symptoms and the depressant acts mainly on the negative symptoms, you end up much worse that you would have been. Each person needs their own formula…. I love caffeine, especially when I get up from a nap. I go downstairs, nuke half a cup of water, then throw two scoops of instant coffe in, then just literally pound it. Wakes a person up real fast..lol Take care, Chris

Hi Just Me I am on side effect meds for the akathesia. I’m on lorazepam (ativan) and cogentin. I also take over the counter benadryl. When I start pacing nothing stops it even though I am on side effect medications. I have my own way of dealing with atkathisia but I don’t want to say on the newsgroup. I never sleep during the day so I can get by without caffeine though it is nice to have once in a while. thanks Penguin

Geez…This is one of my biggest vices!! I have a difficult time resisting more than one can (because I, too am tired). What I’ve been doing, though, is only drinking caffeine during the first part of the day. Then again, I’ve been up at night sleeping during the day, so I’m all messed up sleep/caffeine wise. But, I relate to your situation.

Actually, your problem might be that you aren’t getting enough caffeine instead of too much. You might want to try a caffeine tablet, its equivalent to two cups of coffee without the stomach irritation. They don’t disturb my sleeping if taken in the morning.
