What to eat during Radiation Treatment?
Question:
Did they not give you any diet sheets at the radiation oncology dept? Otherwise, ask to see the nutritionist.
During pelvic radiation I was advised to eat a low residue diet, information on which was specifically provided by the radiation oncology department. I was encouraged to eat things like applesauce, tapioca pudding, baked potato, and good "bland" nourishing foods. That and Lomotil saw me thru! Georgia endometrial cancer dx 6/97 Stage IIIC TAH/BSO, external (5 wks) and internal pelvic radiation Visit http://www.eyesontheprize.org for Gyn Cancer support and resources! http://www.eyesontheprize.org/stories/georgia.html
Response:
Completely agree with Mike. Just keep a well balanced diet with plenty of proteins. The irradiation of certain areas, like the abdomen and pelvis, preclude the use of fat or high residue, just to put some rest to your intestine. In the irradiation of the head and neck (mouth and throath) avoid extreme temperatures (too cold or too hot), spicy food or food that even after thoroug shewing remains mecanically traumatic. Avoid local trauma and eat protein and carbohidrates and going through radiation therapy shouldn’t be a problem. RVR – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – The foods for people recieving radiotherapy are essentially a normal well balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals with a balance shifted towards protien to provide the necessary building materials your body needs to repair all the damage the treatment does. Individuals will always have different specific food preferences but highly seasoned foods are generally best avoided. The rule is if it upsets you avoid it (obvious?) If your diet is very poor (very common in cancer sufferers) concentrate on high carbohydrate (starch) and protien foods and supplement with ‘food’ drinks like sustagen. A simple multivitamin and mineral supplement will help your body best utilise the food it does get. I think that megadoses of anything upsets the optimum balance of your body’s metabolism and would not recommend it for that reason. MIKE I would like to find out what diet recommendations and suggestions would you have that would help immune system and white blood cell counts. What food is good, how to eat it etc. I’ve read that the following foods are often helpful for people receiving radiation therapy: CABBAGE dark-green leafy vegetables wheatgrass & barley grass Sea vegetables and seaweed– such as arame, hiziki, nori, wakame, Irish moss, dulse, and particularly KELP. coriolus versicolor (PSK mushroom) garlic ginger holy basil

Most of these woill probably make the situation worse. Did they not give you any diet sheets at the radiation oncology dept? Otherwise, ask to see the nutritionist.
