Florida Cold Spell

Categories: Cancer Support

Question:

Cheer up, everyone!  It’s supposed to get better down here starting tomorrow, and tonight is predicted to be less horrific than the past couple were.  Brrrr!  I’ve had just about enough of layering my clothes, the cat is paranoid about the sheet-covered plants and the cold patio, and I want to put my Polartec "sack" back in the sweater bag in the guest room!  <S Diana

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Go to Home Despot and you can get a roll of 6mil thick plastic–100 feet for $20.  (they have it in the paint drop-cloth section).  I put this on the roof and sides of my slathouse–and roll it down when the temps are going below 60 degrees or there is a lot of wind.   I don’t have a heater and so far, seems to work nicely.   However–the phals definately don’t like the temps in the 40’s.  They are just going to have to come indoors. I’ve tried to keep my orchid house as warm as possible, however with the wind the plants still got some preetyy cold temps. Is there anything that I should be doing (e.g. fungicides) to them during the day or after the cold snap breaks to prevent any additional problems. –Alynne http://www.geocities.com/RainForest/Jungle/2947

Caps, I think fungicide prophylaxis would be a good idea. Is there any leaf damage (softening) that you can see yet? Phals might be the most susceptable or plants not in the best of health before the cold weather moved in. -Rod- I’ve tried to keep my orchid house as warm as possible, however with the wind the plants still got some preetyy cold temps. Before I got my greenhouse I kept mine in a shade house which I hung plastic around during the cold spells and used a small electric heater.   I did not have any major problems with fungus mainly loosing leaves due to the cool temperatures.  They all seemed to bloom when it warmed up.  Good luck, it is suppose to get cold again tonight. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I’ve tried to keep my orchid house as warm as possible, however with the wind the plants still got some preetyy cold temps.
