Osteosarcoma in an 8 Year Old
Question:
<< I just found my way to this newsgroup and have already found a great deal of useful information. <cut I would like to know if there are any people out there who have experienced this type of cancer and just what to expect. http://www.acor.org This is the web address of ACOR (Association of Cancer Resources Online). Go to Mailing Lists, and scroll down through the various lists to the one called SARCOMA. There are over 400 subscribers, several of whom are dealing with osteosarcoma for themselves or their children. Peter Fish RUSS 2001 (Run the US for Sarcoma 2001)

Please visit the National Cancer Institute’s CancerNet web site at http://cancernet.nci.nih.gov/. CancerNet contains in-depth information specifically about osteosarcoma, as well as information on support and resources available to cancer patients and their families. The CancerNet osteosarcoma pages are at: http://cancernet.nci.nih.gov/Cancer_Types/Osteosarcoma.shtml CancerNet’s Support and Resources page can be accessed at: http://cancernet.nci.nih.gov/support_resources.html D. I have also contacted the American Cancer Society which has provided many pieces of information as well as other places to contact. My eight year old niece was diagnosed a week ago with osteosarcoma. Her femur, just above the knee is affected, and the X-rays reveal one lesion in her lung. She will begin an agressive chemotherapy regimen by this weekend. After 12 weeks, they will remove the affected bone, and if necessary, the spot on her lung. Needless to say, the entire family is devestated by this news. The treatment is going to be long – at least thirty weeks. This will inevitably be a hardship for my brother and his family, since he is the only one who works, and they have five other children at home. The rest of my family has decided to do what is necessary to raise enough money to help them through this crisis. I would sell my soul if I thought it would help. I would like to know if there are any people out there who have experienced this type of cancer and just what to expect. I cannot seem to get any prognosis, although people keep saying that the chances of survival are better than ever. Also, I am looking into ways to present fundraisers out in the community, so if you have any ideas, I am open to them to. Please take the time to pray for this wonderful little girl – Her name is Page. She does not deserve this (who does?). Thank you for taking the time to read this. Carol

When my child was in cancer treatment, the two children that we knew with osteo did not survive, but someone posts here who did survive. What I learned from their parents is the importance of having access to a PET scanner (the MRI at our hospital did not show one child’s recurrence, but the PET did when they went for a second opinion at another hospital). To get very good information, go to http://www.oncolink.upenn.edu Click on pediatric cancers and it will bring up all choices. I think this is the best source of cancer information online.
