Marijuana for nausea & appetitie

Categories: Cancer Patients

Question:

Hi I know that the use of Marijuana for advanced cancer patients is controversial , but would appreciate any info on the subject. My mother has advanced Myeloma and is suffering very much with a lack of appetite, extreme nausea + periodic vomiting. She had chemo 10 days ago – I don’t think that she will opt for anymore as I think the effects are too severe for her. She is willing to try anything to help with her suffering. I just need to know if she has marijuana how it should be prepared/administered. I obviously don’t want to do anything harmful to her, but would like to make her last days as comfortable as possible. Thanks Jon

Check if the anti-nausea ingredient is available in pill form.  I heard a rumour that it is not THC that reduces nausea.  Apparently this other non-controversial compound is available in pill form.  No guarantees, I only heard this once.  Ask the medical oncologist about the pills. Different chemo may have different or less side-effects for her. —           oligo 2, 6/19/2k no rsc, rad 30 8/24/2k-10/11/2k, w&s 11/11/2k "Life is a non-renewable resource, use it well."           Send no SPAM. "Hon, am I confused? Oh, sorry miss."  http://pages.infinit.net/curlypp/

… snip … There’s the real pot that you smoke and then there’s synthetic pot. There are alot of anti-nausa meds , pill form and they put it in the IV saline bags.  I think everyone has lost of appetite during chemo.  Chemo is poison, and you feel lousy.  You have to force feed your self , a little at a time.  Forget about taste, make up cream of wheat/rice/butter, use stainless steel cookware.  Don’t make foods… aiming for taste.  Taste buds will be effected and soon everything will taste like soap for awhile. Make foods bland. When I was going thru C/R-tx, I d/l this post on foods. "The early work of Otto Warburg, some 60 years ago (Cause and Prevention of Cancer; Biochem Zeits, 152: 514-520, 1924), showed clearly that cancer was associated with anaerobic (deficiency of oxygen) conditions, resulting in fermentation and a drop in the pH of the cell.  (Low pH Hyperthermia Cancer Therapy, Cancer Chemotherapy Pharmacology 4: 137-145, 1980).  Moreover, the production of mutation receptors cannot occur with the pH of the cell in the healthy, calcium buffered 7.4 to 6.6 range." What this says is that cancer cells cannot mutate in an alkaline environment of the terrain of the body with a pH range of 6.6 to 7.4   So how can you accomplish this?  Well, there is a hard way and an easy way. The hard way to accurately alkalize the body is to eat a strict diet of 80% alkaline and 20% acid foods. (mostly raw vegetables high in alkaline) Here is a list of good alkaline foods: Good alkaline list: Asparagus Beets broccoli Sprouts (high in parasites)  (should be soaked over night) Cabbage Carrots Cauliflower Celery Cucumbers Green & yellow squash Eggplant (rumored to be a carcinogen?) Green beans Lima beans Green peppers Spinach Mustard Collards Kale Lettuce (avoid iceberg which is high in parasites) Okra Onions Garlic Parsley Radishes Turnips Here is a list of good acid foods: The following is a list of foods you can eat freely up to 20%. Soybeans (tofu) Millet Buckwheat (and all sprouted grains or beans) Eat lots of garlic and onions Seeds (sesame, sunflower, pumpkin, flax) Nuts (almonds & hazel nuts, must be soaked for 12 hours or sprouted, This will allow them to be digested without using additional digestive enzymes. Fatty acids are also very important to include in the diet such as cold pressed borage, sunflower, hemp and flaxseed oil.  You can also use Braggs amino acids or celtic sea salt and herbs for seasoning. This information is clearly and clinically drawn out in a famous book by Japanese scientist Herman Aihara titled: Acid & Alkaline

The pills you’re thinking of are Marinol. They supposedly contain the active ingredient of Marijuana that prevents/lessens nausea. I used them for a brief period when I was taking chemo and they did absolutely nothing for me. I’ve spoken with other cancer patients who had the same results with Marinol. However, I had occasion to smoke some real MJ and it absolutely killed the nausea immediately. At the time I wished that I’d had easy access to enough of it to use when I needed it. I suppose I should be grateful to our wonderful government for protecting me from something that might do some good. The only drug that helped me was Zofran – a terribly expensive drug.

There are a few other older anti-nausea meds and much cheaper because patents have run out but they’re alleged to be less effective that Zofran. Oral Zofran by itself caused me very annoying constipation and such pain in urination that I had to stop taking it. Thankfully, nausea is not something I am prone toward.   Many of the people I have known with cancer, alive and otherwise, claim that the marijuana is far and away the best. Peace John

Response:

To help reduce the nausea effects of chemo, her oncologist might want to try slowing down the infusions or changing to a more frequent LOW dose. I didn’t choose chemo, nor is mine advanced at this point, but several friends have had better tolerance with low/frequent infusions or slowing it down (ie: from two to four hours, etc.). As for marijuana, it’s my understanding it won’t hurt her, and smoking of it is FAR better than the pills. — GETTING it may be a problem, though. Sending good wishes and prayers. Lady8

zofran is the most expensive drug hannah was on, besides the chemo….awful..I would think that smoking some gonja would relieve a bit more than just nausea too…eh? <not that I would know  :). Robin…mom to hannah, aka "wild thing".1/17/98 – 9/1/00  wife to E….the other love of my life.
