Well, thinking about what you and jils say, it sounds remarkably sane and normal and the way it SHOULD be. So why were my physio and doctor telling me different things but both nothing to do with bed rest? It got me wondering so I returned to the envelope the doctor I am to see, gave me when in hospital to bring to her later. Should I open it? It *IS* sealed! Should I NOT open it? Well, it’s all about me. So, curiosity got the better of me. I OPENED THE ENVELOPE!! To cut a long story short there is a shadow on my lung which may be some secondary effect of the pneumonia but they dont think so. In fact the radiologist recommends immediately checking into it, with yet another chest x-ray, once the pneumonia can be reasonably said to be clear so there is no chance of some weird shadow caused by the pneumonia. We all know what that COULD be. Now if it IS that bad, I wonder if exercising this close to being let out of hospital with pneumonia IS what I should be doing? Eg, in response to what they urged but against my better judgement, I got dressed today and went out in the cold wind and down to one nearby town to have a coffee and croissant while reading and then walked a loop in the opposite direction back to the car. Then, I went to the OTHER major nearby town and there got bread for lunch (subsequently untouched), checked the PO box, got my wife a thank you card and got home to read that letter. I dont feel worse for the effort. I certainly dont feel BETTER for it though. ….and all I can do is wonder about my wife. Before I read that letter this morning, I was resting, having a quick hour sleep before shaving and such but while waiting to doze off, I was thinking to myself that though it is a lovely area, for a person on her own, it is going to be a real boring place. Hi gregh, Hope you’re feel better soon. Also, I was wondering if you suffer from dysphasia as this may be the cause of your pneumonia. I know I have a lot of trouble swallowing especially around this time of year in the states with all the tree pollen etc. Do you tend to hold liquid and food in your mouth before swallowing as this is a sign of trouble. If you do have dysphagia you may want to seek some physical therapy. Tee, If you – or ANYONE – knows how I am supposed to react to pneumonia, I would appreciate it. I had a physio tell me not to cough and a respiratory specialist tell me to cough my guts up and the physio said exercise ASAP and the doctor said "a little more each day". So I am confused. Any help appreciated. I am extra tired and just in need of some help. i’ve had it twice greg, and was told in no uncertain terms that ‘complete bed rest’ was essential. complete bed rest, totally and utterly doing absolutely nothing. just sleep. and from experience, i agree. the longer you DON’T rest, the longer the illness will last. your body will tell you when to start being active again. don’t listen to it; spend at least another three days in bed after that point. — vini, vidi, vomere i came, i saw, i threw up gregh" <ch…@dontspam.me.dot.ozemail.com.au> wrote in message

Not much wonder you are confused, Greg. If you would accept some advice from a fourth health professional (usually I tell people the best thing to do with advice is ignore it!)…… you probably need to cough a little, too much could cause bleeding as well as extreme pain etc. etc. As for exercise again I think common sense should guide you here. The body needs rest to begin the healing process, if you try to get out there and exercise ASAP you will just wear yourself out and set yourself back. Coughing will happen whether you want it to or not, pneumonia is NOT funny. Just ask anyone who has had it. If you can barely lift a hand to blow your nose chances are you probably can’t do deep knee bends.
Anyhow, my 2 cents….. rest while you feel like s***, as you gain a little strength, do a little more as the doc said, just don’t be ‘brave’ and show the world how brave you are. Sort of like Kathi said about people with MS running the Boston Marathon. I feel I am rambling. I am not posting much as I am having a hell of a time with arthritis and my hands are extremely painful. I didn’t even pull the newsgroup in for 3 or 4 days. I joined alt. support arthritis and haven’t even looked at that ng for many days let alone bring it in. So, if anyone knows what to do about my hands and knees and elbows and arms and legs and whatever…… help! Someone suggested it may be the stress of moving, leaving my job, getting married, unpacking two million boxes, etc. etc. Probably plays a part, but hey, life with Jim Carter is worth it.

Joan, Usually, with health probs I happen to suffer, I know what I am talking about, given that on any particular day, the brain may go West while the body is going East and you end up wondering, like the "vertically challenged" tribe that used to wander about in 7 feet tall grass and were proud of themselves "Wherethehellarewe". My father first got pneumonia, with a lot of others, guarding the Japanese Imperial Palace in the Occupation Forces in the middle of Winter. The officer in charge wouldnt let the guards wear anything to keep them warm. When HIS commanding officer found out, the guy was replaced, naturally. Since then, Dad has been more susceptible to pneumonia and then he got asbestosis making it worse. Over all that close association with the problem, you would have thought I learned something. Dad is a true outback Aussie, though. If he looks sick, then he should be in hospital. If he admits to ANY pain, then it is likely a level that would cause a modern day Aussie to faint. So, learning how things are with him, as he doesnt complain, is hard. So it is that I get pneumonia and barely know how to spell the word, let alone anything much else about it. > cough a little, too much could cause bleeding as well as extreme pain > etc. etc. As for exercise again I think common sense should guide you > here. The body needs rest to begin the healing process, if you try to > get out there and exercise ASAP you will just wear yourself out and > set yourself back.
There is also the chance, with bleeding, that it may be caused BY the pneumonia coughing fits but the reason for the blood may not be that, with this shadow thing on my lung. As to exercise, well, trying to get out and walk the town and did it two days in a row but today I am stuffed so today, I sit home and bludge. Worn out? Almost entirely but not quite there! > Coughing will happen whether you want it to or not, pneumonia is NOT > funny. Just ask anyone who has had it. Well, I grew up with my father, as slightly described above, telling me I was lazy (he didnt know I definitely had sleep apnea and likely MS back then) and me believing it. I think it is now in me that I HAVE to prove I am not being lazy. It isnt for anyone else, just me. Funny how childhood things can stick like that, eh? > I feel I am rambling. I know this sounds silly but if you look on www.arthropharm.com you will find a veterinary use drug called Cartrophen which, interestingly has been tested in Melbourne on humans with great results. I refer you to that for the break-up of the technical drug names. See if you can find them in the human world. If my 9 year old Chow with arthritis is anything to go by, it’s a wonder drug AND unless there is a possibility of cancer, it is safe. Apart from that, you might consider seeing a chiropractor about them. I have seen a chiro take a guy who was in foetal position to being able to walk weakly for the first time in about 15 years and he did it in weeks. It is worth trying. — Earth Federation Founder and Member #1 Are YOU tired of racism and country borders and want a UNITED Earth? Email me! Remove the anti-spammer stuff.

In Oz they have this tendency to give you your referral or whatever correspondence to the other doctor for you to turn up with at the next appointment. I tend to open them these days. Most doctors hate it but they know I have the right. Yes, you ARE right that I may not have had to worry about what might turn out to be nothing anyway BUT I think that I like to know the possibilities. These days, doctors are unlikely to hide things from you but some still do. — Earth Federation Founder and Member #1 Are YOU tired of racism and country borders and want a UNITED Earth? Email me! I never held with doctors with secrets. Dont like the GP I was forced to use to get me IN to hospital because of that. So I dont feel bad about reading about that which should have been explained to me. I would submit that the doctor probably thinks there is no reason to bother me about what may end up being nothing with luck. That has validity, too but it presupposes I am child-like and couldnt handle the news and THAT I dont like one bit. Sometimes doctors THINK they know more than WE do about our OWN minds and it isnt always right. > i have to say you’ve made a remarkable recovery so far; i was laid up for > two or three weeks. no way i could’ve walked and eaten out; i was coughing > so much simply from breathing. the weakness was terrible.
Interesting you say that. I, too, was wondering about all this and was wondering if pneumonia was only a small part but remembering what I saw of the x-ray (and I saw it from my emergency room bed for quite some time), there was something there of significant mass that MUST have been moved for me to even feel THIS much better so that much MUST have been pneumonia. As to the rest of it, the thing is attitude. Eg, they TOLD me to do it so I do it. I know it sounds mindlessly robotic but in a way it is a great help. It is the way Aussies from my father’s generation just fought wars. Point them in one direction, tell them to go get that hill and they just did it. I felt weak as buggery but just did as I was told and was able to switch off while doing it. The physio told me to keep from coughing while the doctor said to KEEP coughing so I decided to LIMIT coughing. Helps a lot. Rather than massive coughing fits weakening me, I am able to blow some of the coughs right on through. Honestly I cant afford that long. I have things I have to do and have lost so much money already. > speedy recovery and better news from the next doc greg ……
Well, going back next week to the one that wanted me to see her. I assume that in this case it may be smarter to stay with her. It was actually the radiologist who found the shadow so now to see if it is still there. Thanks for the well wishes. Not time to give up just yet but it’s hard on the wife yet again. Sometimes I feel so BLOODY ANNOYED with myself for being like this. It makes it all that harder on her and I feel like apologising. She only feels low that she cant do more for me.
