Question:

Can someone tell me if there is an age limit as to when a person can donate a kidney?  I  am 65 and have been told I am too old. Is this correct? Also can a cancer survivor (me) donate? Please respond to group as I get TONS of spam when I leave my address. Thanks.

Response:

Mara, Thanks very much for the information. It is what I suspected but really had not heard anything concrete. And thanks for the cancer note too. My feeling on that is I am cancer free and if anyone doesn’t think I am, prove it!!! Six years for one, one year for another. I don’t know if this is an UNOS regulation or if it is just the hospital I’m listed with, but I was told the cutoff age for donors is sixty, although they’ll take the donor’s health and the like into consideration. As far as the cancer is concerned, I believe you need to be cancer-free for ten years before they will consider you.   (And congrats on beating it, btw!) Mara
