Thanks Heather……I’m gonna get something at the store. The problem is that I’m not sure why I’m getting so much of indigestion is the past few months. It happens at least 5 or 6 times a month and sometimes it feels like a heart attack.

gj, I haven’t read through all the posts, so someone may have already said this.  Something like 90% of ulcers are actually caused by a bacteria and are curable with antibiotics.  The bacteria is called H. pylori (short version).  Another cause for stomach pain  has something to do with a hernia in the esophagus (can’t remember what it is called).   It is common in "older" people (my husband has one; he is in his 40’s) and his doctor told him to take Mylanta every day because the surgery to cure is awful and not worth it. Just my .02. Cookie – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I’ve been getting indigestion quite a bit lately. I have the same problem.  ’cept it’s lasted for 2 years now.  Have to take Tums or other antacids every day. In the great wisdom of been/are there,.done/ doing that :-( If you are having more than occasional indigestion you really should have it checked out by your doctor — you really don’t need an ulcer on top of your depression.  And unless you are lactose intolerant, milk and dairy products are nice when you have an ulcer.  I’ve heard recently that milk is not longer prescribed but I still think it helps a lot, but YMMV For the last couple of years I have been taking Zantac (prescription is cheaper than OTC) mainly because my "breakfast" consist of 7 pills and dinner is another 6.  Of course having a tendency towards ulcers doesn’t help. Last point, taking antacids on a regular basis can cause problems. They mess up your system and basically your are addicted to them.  I have heard that Tums is particularly bad in this respect (I take Mylanta when needed). gj gjalaska at mosquitonet dot com

AAAhhhhh, but I have been to the doctor’s for this.  And unless I want them to shove a tube down my throat, there’s not much they can tell me. The Dragon

Steve — I’ve lived with "indigestion" as far back as I can remember.  Until a few years ago, I thought that was just the way it was.  Then the words "acid reflux" were spoken to me.  Yeah, I know it’s all over the TV commercials any more, but it’s very common and it can be a major problem if not treated. When we moved to Nevada, we arrived broke, jobless, and without any kind of medical coverage.  My SO already had a diagnosis and had been taking prescription-strength Zantac in Washington, but here we couldn’t have filled a Washington prescription even if we did have the money, and we didn’t.  He limped along with OTC Zantac when we could afford it until his medical kicked in.  Too late.  In July he got VERY sick — sick enough to go to the local clinic (there’s no hospital here); they called an ambulance and had him transported to Las Vegas. He had a bleeding ulcer.  The in-hospital treatment involved a lot of tubes and needles and waiting for test results.  When he got out, he had a new prescription (Prilosec) and a warning from the gastric specialists that the acidity problem had to be controlled constantly or he would just end up right back in the hospital.  He was also warned that the damage acid reflux causes when not properly treated can be only the beginning, and warned him of the cancer risks that go with the problem.  He already knew about the cancer risks, though; that’s how his father died–after years of eating baking soda for his own "indigestion." Sometimes indigestion is just "wrong food," but sometimes it’s more. Don’t take chances with persistent indigestion, please.  Even the non-lethal consequences are ugly, frightening, and painful.
