First MTX and First Week on Job
Question:
Wow Walt, sounds like the injection training was a waste of time. The job sounds great. I just hope you don’t were yourself completely out before your secretary starts. Sarah L "Friends are those people who know the words to the song in your heart and sing them back to you when you have forgotten the words." (unattributed)
Response:
Walt, good for you in getting your injection training taken care of in spite of a less than helpful nurse. And glad to hear so far no problems from the MTX. Congrats on your new job! It sounds wonderful to have a job that you enjoy so much! Hopefully that boss of yours will calm down when she sees you have everything under control. Take care and don’t OVERwork yourself this coming week! xoxo -kk – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – This has been a really busy week for me folks, which is why I haven’t been around much. We did the so-called "injection training" Tuesday. It started off with my going to the hospital pharmacy to get the MTX and needles, only to discover that they didn’t have any. That was fine with me, since I didn’t want to do the injection yet anyway (had a big meeting immediately after the appointment), but it left the nurse in a tizzy. Her first reaction was, "we’ll have to postpone for two weeks." To which I responded, "No we don’t. Do you have some saline solution?" We finally agreed to do the training with saline, which is what I wanted to do all along (thank you pharmacy guy). The nurse was very upset and said that there was no way she would allow me to give myself my first MTX injection without her present. I gently (yes gently – ask Wendy) reminded her that this was my body and I would decide when and where I did the first injection, thank you. She didn’t take that very well. Anyway, she was upset, so she hands me an alcohol scrub, the needle, and the saline, and tells me to give myself the injection. So that’s what I did. Her only complaint was that I let my shirt fall down over the site between scrubbing it with alcohol and giving the injection. Then she handed me my prescriptions and sent me on my way. Gee, that was worth waiting for <g. Wednesday I started my new job as the coordinator of the Harford County Cancer and Tobacco Community Coalition. This is a tobacco settlement funded position that should be three jobs. I am exhausted already. Between trying to get my office set up, attending two coalition meetings and a teleconference, and trying to balance a budget that was being ignored until I started, I have been swamped! But I love it! My secretary starts in two weeks, which will be a big help, and I am going to try to get approval for an intern (we have plenty of money). With both of those, maybe I will have time to do some actual coalition building, which is what I was hired for. Right now my boss, who is 15 years younger and has less education and experience, is watching me like a hawk. I hope she calms down soon. But in any event, I still love the work. Friday evening I gave myself my first injection, only 5mg to start. All went well. There was a little soreness at the site that lasted about an hour, a small amount of nausea, and big time fatigue. Slept like a baby that night. No noticeable affects the day after. So, I am pleased. When I took it orally 9 years ago, I woke up with mouth ulcers the day after. Maybe this is going to work! Talk to you all later. Walt

Hi Walt, that a way to take control! And to think they would have put you off another 2 weeks! Good luck with the new job and new med. Be sure and take folic acid for any side effects. julie molli

Walt-What joy to hear some good from you!! I am so glad you like the job, and I am so glad the MTX injection went well. Maybe you have turned a corner. God Bless. Char "Remember, I’m pulling for ya’. We’re all in this together." Red Green
Response:
Walt, I’m so happy to hear that things are coming together for you. With any luck, you will notice improvement with the MTX and very little side effects. I’m still taking it orally and have just bulled through the fatigue. The mouth sores are constant, but I’ve had them so long now that I hardly notice any more. Good luck with the new job…I’m sure you’ll look forward to being able to delegate some of those duties to the secretary. As hard as it is right now, try to stay rested, especially around the MTX days. LOLOL Thanks for the update, Walt. I know you have got yourself a supply of folic acid. You and that nurse made me laugh and laugh. You knowwww,,,you and I would either get along famously or kill each other. LOLOLOL People need more honesty in dealing with professional people. Angle that needle a little and inject slowly.
