Question:

For the many of us that have ever grieved (or are still grieving) over the departing of our beloved pets, may this bring some comfort. There is a bridge connecting Heaven and Earth. It is called the Rainbow Bridge because of its many colors.  Just this side of the Rainbow Bridge there is a land of meadows, hills, and valleys with lush green grass.  When a beloved pet dies, the pet goes to this place.  There is always food and water and warm Spring weather.  The old frail animals are young again. They play all day with each other. There is only one thing missing, they are not with their special person who loved them so much on Earth so, each day they run and play until the day comes when one suddenly stops playing and looks up!  The nose twitches!  The ears rise up!  The eyes are staring!  Then suddenly,  this one runs from the group!  You have been seen, and when you and your special friend meet, you take him or her into your arms and you both embrace.  Your face is licked again and again and you look once more into the eyes of your trusting pet.  Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together, never again to be separated.  author unknown

This made me weep.  I lost my first true friend less than one year ago. Hi Joel. It’s sad that animals don’t live as long as we do, so there always comes a time when we have to say goodbye.  My dear old horse, Ben Nivek, was a true friend.  I got him when he was seven, then when he was fourteen he went incurably lame.  My vet prescribed painkillers which kept him comfortable so he became just a pet.  He could hear me coming a mile away, would whinny and gallop up to the gate, even if it wasn’t feeding time.  Then he would nibble my feet and all the way up as far as my hair, which he would chew, and he’d put his head on my shoulder and give a huge sigh.  I used to joke that in a previous existence he’d been a dirty old man!  Then when he was sixteen he developed cancer (in a delicate spot – men always wince so I won’t be more specific).  He had an operation and recovered well then six years later it came back, and this time it had spread.  I asked my vet if I could send him to the horse hospital at Newmarket (UK) for radiation therapy but John (vet) wouldn’t let me, for his sake and for mine.  So we did the kindest thing for him by giving him a quick and merciful end.  The weirdest thing was, the day it was scheduled was the one day he didn’t come to meet me at the gate, so I had to go and get him – he knew all right.  I gave him a really good dinner full of all the things he liked best – mints, carrots, sugar, and said goodbye and thanked him for all the love he’d given me.  All this happened just four months after my husband left me so I felt like everyone I loved was leaving me, especially as I had to sell my other horse, Cleo – I no longer had enough money to keep her. The gauchos in South America believe there is a horse heaven called Trapalanda.  So do I.  I also believe I will see my dear, beloved cat Chuddy again, and that you will see Sammy again because I don’t believe humans have an exclusive patent on souls. Take care Jill

Jill, This is the sweetest story…I’m printing it off for my 14 yr old daughter.  She learned to ride on a lesson pony that died at the age of 48….unusually old for a horse.  She was terribly sad at his death as she had grown very close to him.  I think your story will help her in the future. thanks, deb2

Yes, I sobbed like a baby when I read this to.  But it is beautiful and comforting in the knowledge that I will get to see my pets again.  Sometimes I forget that and things like the above really seem to give me some form of comfort. When I was a little kid, I had a two goldfish. They gave birth to some little ones. First the dad killed himself in the oxygen filter (or whatever you call it). Then the mom. Then the babies. I think I appropriately named them Romeo and Juliet. But my cat has lived at least eight years now. sarah http://members.theglobe.com/wonder_grrrl/ P.S.  if the name says Betsy, that’s not me.  3 people use this e-mail account.
