lymphoma in dogs

Categories: Cancer Chemotherapy

Question:

First, please accept my sympathy.  We’ve been through cancer with two older dogs and one young one. Talk to your vet about possible treatments and their side effects.  Dogs often do much better with chemotherapy than people do, and it might make a difference.  I’ve worked for a vet who treated dogs having cancer, and these animals really tolerated the treatment very well.  Try to weigh treatment options in terms of how your dog will feel and how much "good" time it will buy.  Dogs don’t understand about "tomorrow", so it’s important not to keep them suffering because we can’t bear to part with them.  Sadly, sometimes releasing them from their illness is the most loving gift we can give. Once you get over the shock of the diagnosis, take time to make every day your dog has a wonderful one.  When my husband’s dog was given only a few months to live (Mast cell cancer), he changed his work schedule so he could come home early enough to take walks with her in daylight hours.  We took her to drive-up food places and ordered ice cream just for her.  We will always miss her, but we feel at peace about the last months she had. My thoughts will be with you.  – Rosemary Hoffman                 Australian Cattle Dog Annie CD, NA, HIC Jackson, Mississippi             Elkhound Kodiak SC (Snuggle Certified)
