Wooden Boats Newsgroup?

Categories: Cancer Center

Question:

I feel like such a block head.  I think this thread stems from the fact that I lumbered in here with my comment about puns which, if I had it to do again, I would chuck out.  I’m afraid that we are not out of the woods yet. dudley .

Maintaining this sure is alot of work.

Response:

Does anyone know of a newsgroup or LISTSERV mailing list for people interested in wooden boats and the building thereof?

I posted the above last week, along with a similar posting to rec.woodworking. Since then I have received a number of e-mail messages expressing interest in such a newsgroup.  I am keeping copies of all messages I receive on this subject, so that I will have a list of e-mail addresses of interested parties. Some of those interested are interested in having a newsgroup focusing on boatbuilding, without regard to materials.  Others are interested in having a newsgroup focusing on wooden boats, but not limited to building them. I think the discussion should continue for a while before anyone jumps on this and forms a new group.  I will continue to build a list of those who express interest and opinions through postings or through e-mail messages directly to me.  My e-mail address should be good at least through July 15th; after that I may be off the Internet for a short time while moving across the country to a university with better access to salt water.                                 – Mark Hammond

I posted a message about this last week, but you may not have seen it.  An electronic mailing list already exists for this, called YACHT-L.  Subscribe by sending a message to: Leave the subject line blank; the message should say:       SUBSCRIBE YACHT-L [your name] — -Craig Haggart, Ericson 27 "Roxanne"  Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lab at SLAC  Menlo Park, California

Maybe WoodenBoat magazine could get involved.  Anyone have a Lyman? —

Yes, but the listservs are a royal pain in the keister when you can get newsgroups. I get the yacht-l, but the traffic is often unbearable, and much of it duplicates what’s on here — lot’s of talk about outboards, etc. Lists are really for those who can’t get news — and I sure wish they would pipe yacht-l to a newsgroup so it would be easier to deal with. I often end up just deleting most of the messages I get on the three lists I get because I don’t have time to wade thru them all to see if I want to read them. A rec.boats.sail and a rec.boats.build is what is needed.

Response:

Great idea on the rec.boats.build but did you ever try to wade thru the flotsam floating around in the CompuServe sailboat forum?!

I aggree wholeheartedly.  I can’t afford to have lists cluttering up my e-mail inbox, so I usually do without if I can’t have it on a newsgroup.  I would be very interested in following both of the proposed groups, whether they are set up under rec. or alt., as someone suggested. — Charles Nichols                            Ignorance ain’t what you don’t Information Systems Developer               know, it’s what you know that University of Texas                         ain’t so. Mark, I am all in favor if having a forum dedicated to "Wooden Boats". Perhaps we could get Jon Wilson the editor of WoodenBoat interested. IMHO they are the best source of information on wooden boats in the country. Mark Stahl Thistle’s 732, 1017

Response:

I’m knot (double pun score!) opposed to the puns, and I also think branching into a wooden boat/build your own group is a fine idea.
