Pseudomixoma Peritonea

Categories: Cancer Center

Question:

IHi Leslie – Yes, a friend has pseudomyoxima peritonei.  He was operated on by a Dr. Sugarbaker in Wash., D.C., the only specialist in the US for this type of cancer.  If you want more info, I will put you in touch with him.  Let me know.  He is doing very well and thinks the surgery will give him an extra five years. Darlene

In addition to Dr. Sugarbaker, Dr. Brian Loggie, a surgical oncologist at Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest Univ in NC, has been working with intraperitoneal hyperthermic chemotherapy and pseudomyxoma peritonei and other types of cancer. You can find out more about the hospital and its cancer center at:   http://isnet.is.wfu.edu/bgsm/hema_onc/home.html There’s also a protocol at MD Anderson in Texas. — Ellen S. Frank

Response:

Does anyone know of any treatments for this rare form of cancer which covers internal organs with a muscin, interfering with function until death occurs.  It acts very slowly. A relative of mine has been diagnosed with it and has had one opperation to deal with it which involved opening her up and scraping and washing as much as could be reached.  This has improved her health for a while but, clearly, the source has not been eliminated and neither chemotherapy nor radiation are indicated.  Because it is rare not much is known about it.  Does anyone out there have any experience with Pseudomixoma Peritonea?
