: I have a 34 year old son who has a serious cancer problem and seems to be : unable to get help. Since his doctors are unable to help him with what they : call "a very rare cancer" I am asking if anyone out there can point us to : where there may be some research going on in the "rare cancer field" and where : he might find some help. : I am totally unfamiliar with terms but as he describes his case to me over : the phone, he has "An advanced, malignant, metastatic, cancer which is : manifested by malignant, bilateral body tumors of the backbone and spine." : The tumors on his backbone grown and  recently increased from 3 to 5 with : one more spreading to a rib. Several oncolgists contend they have never seen : this type of cancer and it is so rare they have nothing to suggest that might : help. He has had radiation to the maximum allowed. The only suggestion is : chemotherapy which they tell him they have no idea if it will help or not but : it might help the pain. He is reluctant to proceed with that until he can get : some hint that it might help.  He currently takes morphine for the pain. : If anyone knows of some avenue we might explore for help we would be most : grateful and certainly  look into it. : God bless, : Paul Henry My wife, Elaine had a lumpectomy in July 92 with no positive lympth nodes. The tumor was agressive and estrogen and progestrone positive.  She had CMF and radiation for four months following surgery.  Elaine worked though most of the treatment and in August 93 her back and right hand started hurting.  She went to a lot of doctor’s, but, none of them suspected metastases of BC.  Finally in October 93, she had a followup visit with her oncologist and when he got the blood test, he asked if she was having and joint pain since her alkene phospotasis marker had jumped from 140 to 380+.  Well, a bone scan reavealed the worst.  Elaine had a lot of tumors in her spine, ribs, pelvis and right hand.  We thought high dose chemo and autologous bone marrow transplant (HDC/ABMT) would be the best way to go.  Unfortunatly, our company (self-insured) would not cover the proceedure.  We cashed in our retirement, took a second on our home, borrowed everything we could.  We paid out $152,000 in medical bills in 1994.  It was worth it, because Elaine would not be alive if we had not done this.  Elaine still only has a 20% chance of non-recurrance within a two year period that began November 1993.  We hope and pray that she is in the minority and escapes the odds. Thank You, Bruce

I hope the best for your son, —   ___                    _ __       ()  (        /           ‘ )  )      / <_/                                    /                                       ‘
