Cath pain

Categories: Bladder Cancer

Question:

Thanks to those who responded…it is good to know that even when your condition is painful, you have others who shared it and especially that it is not unusual. I talked to my doc today and to several health care provider friends who seem to echo the opinions of the group….if urine is flowing, even slowly, there is not likely a need for concern and that spasms and swelling are more likely the cause rather than blockage. If it IS blockage, which CAN happen, NEVER try to back flush yourself due to extreme risk of infection.  Also, the link to defecation might be due to the nerves that service both are the same and that urination after defecation is the norm….      gas

Response:

Bruce, my experience with catheter was identical to yours. I was catheterized after cystoscopy and Trans Urethral Resection for bladder cancer. The only thing that helped at all was Detrol but, like you, removal of the damned thing was a joyous day!! Pete

Just had my RP ,6/27, and having problems with the cathater….urine only runs in a slow trickle thru it and when I need to pass a larger amount I get burning and a  lot of pain…even my kidneys are feeling sore…I’m thinking there might be a blockage in the bladder???   Even had a small amount of urine pass thru the penis but outside the catheter…anyone have simular or words of advice???   Gerry

Response:

I think your right about the blockage–what does your doc say?  you dont need kidney damage

Response:

I had two good docs for the surgery but was only able to talk to a third partner, on duty for Sunday, who didn’t take me too seriously when explained the problem….told me to sit on a heating pad and drink even more water…neither of which sounded too sane…my reg docs will hear from me on Monday…will let you know. BTW after reading about some of the problems with the titanium staples, I asked my Uro about it and she told me she tied off the veins….I love an old fashond girl!!!  Even Walsh uses the staples as I saw them used on a video of one of his operations…             gas – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -I think your right about the blockage–what does your doc say?  you dont need kidney damage

I had the same experience with the catheter, but discovered it was due to bladder spasms. Felt like I REALLY had to go, and unable to do so. Also experienced urine escaping outside the catheter, usually during one of these spasms. It was especially noticeable during a bowel movement, as though those two functions were linked (and probably are). In time I learned to concentrate on relaxing when I felt the onset of a spasm, but it was never easy. Removal of the catheter was a high point in my life :-) – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Just had my RP ,6/27, and having problems with the cathater….urine only runs in a slow trickle thru it and when I need to pass a larger amount I get burning and a  lot of pain…even my kidneys are feeling sore…I’m thinking there might be a blockage in the bladder???   Even had a small amount of urine pass thru the penis but outside the catheter…anyone have simular or words of advice???   Gerry

Bruce, I didn’t have the problems you had with your catheter, but I agree that when it was removed, it was one of the happiest days of my life. {:-) Bill Denes

You are right.  When you sit down to go potty with a cath in you get the same thing.  A bladder spasm.  those are the problems and you need to ride with the wave and do not push.  the tube drains very slowly and there is no big peeing goin on.  Drink plenty of water and relax, and walk.  You will get better. there is no blockage.   John Loomis – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I had the same experience with the catheter, but discovered it was due to bladder spasms.
